I am battling whether or not to approach this review as a chef or as a foodie. Since I tried this in the kitchen while working an event I will take the chef point of view. Gigi’s cupcakes has a great reputation. The cupcakes were beautiful. The Pink Lemonade cupcakes were on the menu for the Go Pink event today. There was an enormous amount of frosting which was not an issue, the fact that the taste of the frosting battled the taste of the actual cupcake bothered us. Three chefs tried it. The cupcake was moist, soft, and the texture was perfect. The texture was just a tad shy of being dense. There were lemon zest specs in each cupcake and it was very tart, im guessing to combat the sweet of the frosting. The frosting was not a disgusting color of pink, Great Job! But the frosting was piled high, again not necessarily the issue, the issue with the frosting is that it was not sweet enough to cut across the too tart lemony flavor of the cupcake. I was very confused as was my colleague. We both sat still for a few minutes chewing deciding whether or not to continue our cupcake journey. My counterpart dropped out, I continued alone. I finished more than half, but I tell you it was the most complicated flavor profile of a cupcake that Id ever eaten. The straw in the cupcake was REAL! That is very dangerous to consumers, especially chefs who normally use edible straws. The lemon candy was pretty awesome. The mint was out of place, as lemonade is not a mojito and does not include a mint flavoring of any kind. The raspberry was really good but it was not a raspberry flavored pink lemonade, so this further confused me. I am interested in trying a lemon dream cupcake. I may just have to venture out and try another type of cupcake to really say that I liked Gigi’s. A little advice: When you boast a pink lemonade cupcake, you had better get it right Gigi.
Buy a cake mix. I got the wedding cake cupcake. Yes the icing is too much, but the flavor was unimpressive. You can do better with a cake mix and store bought icing. Won’t go back again.
Beautiful cupcakes that taste great…after you remove 2/3 of the frosting. I’m not sure why other reviewers are so angry about that. Just take some of the frosting off and enjoy your cupcake! I didn’t think the prices were ridiculously high. We paid about $16 for 6 large cupcakes, boxed up nice and pretty. What erked me was that they have a line on your cc receipt to add a tip. For what?! For expertly placing a cupcake into a box? Isn’t that what you’re getting paid to do?
