Very frsh – Very friendly – Very Nice!. Being one of the many lunch spots in the downtown Cincinnati area, Mr. Sushi finds itself competing against a wide variety of nearby dining options on any given day. These range from the more upper end establishments such as Prime 47 and Nada, both of which are situated practically right next door, to staples such as Panera Bread just around the corner. If hot dogs from a cart are what you are in the mood for, you can find those down here, too. There is even a Chipotle-esque you point at it, we make it type sushi place a block away. Finding myself in the heart of Cincinnati at lunch on a weekday is a rare occurrence for me, but at the suggestion of my co-worker, we stopped in here. The room itself is perhaps a bit larger than one would expect just by looking at it from the glass and aluminum front that faces 6th street. It is a high ceilinged space, done in bamboo greens, whites and warm teak wood tones. We were greeted immediately; given our choice of sitting at the sushi bar counter straight ahead as you enter, or at a seat or booth in the main space to the right. Choosing the latter, we were led to a comfortable table and provided with several lunch menus. Our server, Abby, soon arrived to take our drink orders. Her enthusiastic Oh my God it is really good look and response to my friend when he asked about their raspberry tea left no doubt as to its deliciousness. A moment later she was back with our beverages, and we ordered. There are two lunch menus: One is their sushi menu, which is moderately extensive with 42 different rolls, the other has an assortment of Japanese starters, main dishes, deserts and drinks. I order the Hot Stone Bowl Bibimbap. It consists of assorted vegetables over rice with shrimp (normally beef), a fried egg on top, and a sweet, spicy Bibimbap sauce on the side. This also comes with a salad. My lunch mate ordered the Bento box, which consists of the protein of choice, rice, a house salad, and assorted side dishes. He also ordered a bowl of soup. Shortly the food arrives. I find that while I enjoy the flavor of the dressing, the salad is completely over-dressed. It is swimming in dressing. The piping hot stone bowl (which cost one dollar extra to heat, but is so worth it) contains artfully cut carrots, cucumbers, daikon radish, and seaweed. There are a few shrimp, which are rather smallish, and the fried egg. I dig in. The veggies are very fresh, but I find that the egg has seemingly cooked to a semi-solid yolk from the heat of the rice below. Good, but not the creamy, yolky delight you would get with a full runny center. The rice on the bottom is fantastic. The hot stone bowl has created a wonderfully crusty layer where the two meet. I really, really enjoyed this. The Bibimbap sauce that accompanies the dish is great. I would take a bottle of it home if I could. My lunch mate thoroughly enjoyed his meal too, yet found that the bowl of soup became just too much food. He felt that the soup alone would have made a meal. Like mine, everything in the box was fresh and well prepared. They have 12 price sushi after four, being that they cater mainly to the downtown lunch crowd. They have a full bar, and several TVs behind the bar with sports and news.Overall, I really enjoyed lunch here. It was reasonably priced, but not cheap. If I find myself down here again for lunch, I would certainly put Mr. Sushis on my list of food possibilities.
Lovely!. Four of us had dinner here tonight and were delighted by the service and the sushi! We are from out of town and initially could not find Mr. Sushi, so we called for directions and the man who answered the phone was extremely helpful and pleasant, we found it right away. We were seated immediately and informed of the half price sushi special. We chose quite a few rolls, which came out surprisingly quickly. The man who served us clearly explained the rolls, he gave us directions greeted us and made us feel truly welcome. Our waitress (I don’t know her name but she was wearing a gold necklace) was kind, informative and exhibited excellent customer service! She was neither hovering nor hard to find, and seemed to pop out of nowhere when we had a question about our rolls! We had a wonderful experience and will not hesitate to visit again next time we are in town!
Be Careful. What a Joke! Same old tired mayonnaise goop crap that was served at Dancing Wasabi. I wonder how long till Mr. Choi stops paying his bills and staff? Would not eat here again on a bet. White tuna= Escolar, Red snapper=Tilapia. Do your homework on Charlie Choi before you ever eat at one of his restaurants.
Decent Lunch Spot. I enjoy their sushi and ahi tuna salad for lunch.
Awesome!. Have gone there several times at lunch and dinner. Always get wonderful service, sushi is fresh and delicious. Miso soup and salad are tasty and fresh. The last time we were there, they hadn’t had too many diners due to poor weather and the sushi chef was kind enough to make a special roll for us, free of charge. It was also delicious! Will absolutely come back.
Maybe it’s my fault? I have been going to Mr. Sushi’s for lunch since they opened in Cincinnati. Once they got past the growing pains of a newly-opened restaurant, I always found the food tasty and the service efficient. On my last 2 trips, both after 1 pm, I have been greeted by near-absent service, soggy tempura and old dried out sushi on my bento box. Today, there was even trouble distinguishing between chicken and fish. It’s sad to lose a lunch staple to neglect and bad management.
