It’s always a challenge to pick a good place to eat when you are just stopping somewhere for the night. Sometimes you get lucky, but most of the time you roll the dice and hope you at least end up with a mediocre meal. Fortunately, Old Canal Smoke House exceeded expectations on all counts. I really liked the ambiance, kind of like a BBQ pub – the service was fine as well. Of course, the food is what counts, and Old Canal Smoke House satisfied in this area. We tried pulled pork, baby back ribs, ranch fries, mac ‘n cheese, cornbread, and little sweet potato nuggets. All were at least good, some were excellent. The sweet potato nuggets came with a little dish of melted marshmallows for dipping, a nice touch. Their BBQ sauce was thick and sweet, a nice change from southern BBQ sauces which tend to be too watery and vinegary much of the time. The best part of the whole meal was the beer, however. You don’t expect a small town restaurant to provide a satisfying beer experience, but Old Canal Smoke House was a pleasant surprise. They actually served flights of beer, and all four varieties I tried were excellent. I enjoyed the Vulcan (apparently a local Ohio brew) so much I had a pint of it after my flight. The prices were not exactly cheap, especially for a small town in the midwest, but I left full and satisfied. If you are stopping for a meal in Chillicothe, I recommend you give Old Canal Smoke House a try.
Great food and love the barbecue sauce. Plus friendly service. Will stop again!
Saucy food and saucy service. Stopped by here after riding down at Scioto trails for a late lunch. Great looking building and plenty of space inside. Head’s up no beer on Sundays at this establishment due to their licensing restrictions. I ordered the half chicken that was recommended from the server and it was good but a bit dry so I imagine when it is done right it is pretty outstanding. The sides of baked beans and corn casserole were both very tasty. The server was pretty funny when she teased a friend I was with so I enjoyed that.
I really enjoy eating here.. The prime rib is outstanding!
Good Brisket. The brisket was good and there own sweet and tangy sauce was as well.
Great food, , great service. Great atmosphere. Don’t pass up eating here.
Stopped in while passing through on vacation. Pulled pork sandwich with the house sweet and spicy barbecue sauce was the best I’ve had in years.
