Unbelievably disappointed. I was discriminated against in front of my daughter while I tried to order something from the female owner. She denied service to me based on my sexual orientation. What an embarrassment in front of my own child. I will never know if this restaurant tastes good or not, as I’ll never enter this facility again.
We had planned a Fall dinner with my brother and his wife, and I was looking forward to making a pie (ok, I admit that I wasn’t going to make a homemade crust. I’m not that good). Early that morning we went to Findlay Market to pick up some produce. We stopped for coffee and a visit to The Cake Rack for something sweet. The place was crowded with admirers, but I was able to wiggle myself in to see their amazing home-made cakes and various works of culinary art. ONE bite of a cherry pastry, and my eyes were on a mission to find a pie. There were two left. I felt generous, and left one. I shouldn’t have. It was the kind of old fashioned pie that we remember from the 60’s! I’d forgotten how good pies used to be! There is absolutely no bakery in the area that compares. I’ve been to what some say are the best. They’re not. Well, all of this led me to search their website where I saw that the owner was offering classes in….wait for it…PIE MAKING. I talked a friend into taking the class with me, and it will forever be a sweet memory. The owner is a rare gem who surprised us when as she demonstrated how to make crust, added an interesting combination of vegetables and chicken for a pie we would dine on during the class. It was divine! We learned all of the hands on basics of making perfect crust and we each made our own one pound fruit pies to take home. We brought home enough homemade dough to make a two crust pie, and another crust to freeze for a custard pie at our convenience. Preprinted notes came with the class. This woman is someone with old world values. She limits wedding cakes to one a week, because she insists on making them herself (while running a busy business, teaching classes, and working later than her employees) so that the customer gets the very best. If I knew about this when I got married, I would have put off my wedding date to have her as my baker. i’m impressed that she cares so much about her customers, and surprised she doesn’t have a waiting list well into next year. I’m still working on my pie skills, but in the meantime THE CAKE RACK is my go-to for all of our holiday cakes and pies! If you visit, please leave one behind for me! 🙂
I don’t think it’s enough to have excellent products, and this business is a perfect example why basic customer service and business skills are even more important than products. We visited this bakery in mid-October to order a cake for our November 28 wedding. The owner told us that an order so close to Thanksgiving would be a burden to her, and her staff.I have never had such a weird conversation with anyone in the business of selling anything! She was passive aggressive, saying on one hand she did not want to dissuade us, but it really would be difficult for them to fulfill our order, since her staff and their time off for the holiday was a consideration. Whaaat?!I told her we did not wish to be a burden, and we left. At the time, we were both mystified by the attitude. Later, I couldn’t help but wonder if she just didn’t want to help a gay couple. This is an absurd way to do business, regardless. I recommend taking your business where it’s always welcomed. There are plenty of excellent bakeries in the area, and supporting incompetent service models like this one just promotes bad business in general.
Bravo. Served the hummingbird cake to a ladies’ luncheon and it was all the rave. Excellent!
Jeannette at Cake Rack does amazing things. I’ve enjoyed her pastries at Findlay for years (If she hasn’t sold out by the time I get there) and the sight of a new oven and storefront in Covington makes me smile with anticipation.
