Not so Great. Last year I went to Culp’s Cafe. It was not bad the first time. The food was not great but the Cafe design was nice. I took my friend there a few weeks later for her Birthday. The service was horrible. I bussed my own table. The food was terrible. Burned buns over cooked hamburgers. The service was non existant. No management going on. More socializing than looking after the customers. I saw several people walk out. I will not return. The price was high for the quality of the food. If you need something to drink maybe this place is ok but if you want a meal I would not recommend this Cafe. Judge for yourself though everyone is different. It was just not my idea of good reasonable food.
Food was okay. Had the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with a fruit cup. The sandwich was salty and it looked like only half a cup of fruit. Would not go again.
It was for my brothers graduation and they served delicious fish and chips, sweet potato fries, chicken, and burgers. Plus the waitress Ashley has the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen. For that reason they get a fantastic review. If she ever sees this, I hope she smiles, because she was awesome.
A New Bellyfire for Valentine’s Day and Other Dining Opportunities at Carillon Park. Dining at Culp’s Cafe whether you’re seeking a quick breakfast, a sandwich lunch for a picnic, casual fare or special events dining of the highest caliber, you can look for it at Carillon Park. Culp’s is coming up in the world as they attempt to offer one-of-a-kind culinary events throughout the year. Now the Cafe is open year-round for the convenience of their guests offering outdoor seating during the summer months. If the historical landscape of Dayton isn’t enough to lure you here, the enthusiastic dining could be. Jeff and Molly Blumer, owners of Bellyfire Catering LLC, took over the reins of Culp’s just after Christmas. Bellyfire means having a passion for good food. Passion for providing good service. Passion for entertaining. Passion for every aspect of a job well done. This is the energy and enthusiasm that Bellyfire brings to the tables of Carillon Park’s festivities. Open now for Sunday brunch, the breakfast fare and a stroll in the park make for a pleasant Sunday outing. The pancakes are fluffy ($4.50) and the Yankee Doodle Donut ($2) is feathery sugar rush. Egg dishes are served with crispy hash browns. We sampled Eggs Benedict atop Canadian ham ($7.50) or you can have it with Crab Cakes ($8.50). They also have a Wright Brothers Take Flight Strata of the day ($6.50). Dayton Inventor Omelets are filled with everything from Ham and American Cheese ($6.50) to Roasted Veggies (bell peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, onion, eggplant) and Goat Cheese ($7.50). Of these offerings we can highly recommend the pancakes, Eggs Benedict and light Omelet filled with Artichoke, Roasted Pepper and Mozzarella. Jeff Blumer, Chef/Owner of Bellyfire Catering, comes to the Carillon with 20 years of hands on, practical foodservice experience. Trained at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration with a degree in Hospitality, and his fervor for the foodservice industry was to create a catering company that offers excellent food and attentive service. To launch this company he brought a diverse background having worked for McDonalds, Disney World, Clipper Cruise Lines, several Life Care Services High End Retirement Communities, Sysco Foodservices, and Temecula Creek Inn. Now a father of three, he and his wife wanted to return to her hometown of Dayton. They both are in the process of bringing their vision to the Culp’s lunch menu while preserving historically popular dishes from Culp’s glory days. For lunch, I sampled a stand-up Cobb Salad and then a slightly over grilled Rueben Sandwich, but the menu is currently undergoing revisions so the final draft wasn’t available at the time of this review. They estimated that lunches at the Carillon will run $7-$10. There are daily specials like Slow Roasted Cinnamon Spice Pork. Homemade soups, like butternut squash are among the contributions to the daily menu that his pastry chef wife commandeers. It was smooth, fresh, and balanced. Molly Blumer specializes in Pastry and her down-home carrot cake was tasty. With 16 years of experience in the hospitality industry starting out working with Stouffers Hotel in Dayton as a high school intern, there is the potential to find some interesting desserts coming from this kitchen. She has worked for L’Auberge, Benham’s, Cornell University, Cini-Little International, and Casa de las Campanas. Valentine’s Evening, Bellyfire will organize a two seating special dinner with a Prix Fixe menu ($45) at 6pm amd 8pm. As an appetizer, they will offer a Wild Mushroom Ravioli and a Roasted Pepper Cream, followed by Molly’s Butternut Squash soup made with Granny Smith Apples. For the salad course you can look for a Baby Spinach Salad with Red Onions, Candied Walnuts, Dried Cherries, Feta and Balsamic Vinaigrette. The Entree course you have three choices: Grilled Wild Salmon with Goat Cheese, Oven Roasted Beef of Filet stuffed with Manchego Cheese wrapped with Bacon, or Chicken Provencal. Pasta, potato and cabbage sides will be dressed and drizzled with an assortment of elegant sauces and spices. For dessert you could have a Vanilla Crme Brle or a Chocolate Lava Cake. Dine and take an evening historically romantic stroll among the luminaries. Right around the corner come the Newcom Tavern Dinners March 13-28th. This Prix Fixe menu ($45) here will comprise Fish Chowder, Roast Ham, Spiced Sweet Potatoes and Apples, Baked Beans, Cold Saugh, Pickled Cucumbers, finishing with Brandied Peaches with Mrs. Emerson’s Cookies. Coffee, Tea and fresh Herb Breads coming from Rahn’s Artisan Bread company will also be included. Reservations are required for these special events, even though they are very accommodating. Changes are on the horizon for Culp’s as they step up the culinary events rolled out from Bellyfire Catering. Catered historical event possibilities vary from elegant Tea’s to various Society meetings. Jeff Blumer guest chefs at the Dorothy Lane Market cooking school. As we glanced across the facility during the course of our interview, Jeff Blumer shared some of the things he envisioned for the cafe space. With everything from outdoor dining activities to intimate cooking demonstration events around Culp’s circular counter service area were proposed. It is evident that this young chef has hit the pavement running. Who knows, maybe we will have a Culp’s Culinary Classes someday!Carillon Park’s Culp Cafe 1000 Carillon Blvd. Hours: Mon-Fri 11am-3pm, and Sat-Sun 7am-3pm.
