No crab in the crab cakes…. My husband and I chose this place for Valentine’s Day dinner we went in on Wednesday three days ahead thinking that we would get a better service. As it turns out we did not have a good meal… Mahi Mahi was overcooked and very dry, the baked potato seemed like it was yesterday’s and had been warmed up.Then there was the crabcake I didn’t find any crab in it. Service was average at best, she did send us home with a dessert to go to try to make up for the poor food. I won’t be going back, another disappointment at a place that used to just be the best!!!
Perfect for something special. I read many reviews on a lot of different sites before going to Jay’s. I was nervous about the bad reviews but friends have recommended it so we went. For those who say it is pricey – well, yes it can be but this is not a chain and it is more upscale than applebee’s. I found it precisely in line with other seafood restaurants and the pre-fixe menu made it rather reasonable. $27 for three courses is prefect. For those who say they were trying to up-sell a lot – Um, that’s what restaurants do. Would you like an appetizer? Coffee with dessert? May I suggest some wine? Restaurants want you to have the best experience so they offer what they have! When we turned down an appetizer, our server was respectful and moved on. For those who said the food was not great – we didn’t order whatever it was they said was bad – and our food was wonderful. I had the prefixe menu of Salad, Salmon and Peanut Butter pie and everything was excellent. If anything, the Salmon’s first bite felt slightly overcooked, but overall the food was really delicious. My husband had the Greek style Swordfish which was amazing. Also, please note this is Dayton Ohio and not the New England coast so you are not going to get seafood of that quality once you are used to that. For those who had bad service. We didn’t. Our server was exceptional. We were not rushed at all. We had a long, wonderful experience. We were looked after but never pushed. I wish there were more servers like that. If your server isn’t good, talk to the manager or owner, not splay it all over a review. In a nutshell – lovely location, historical building, dim romantic setting, nice food, exceptional service….perfect for a special occasion like a birthday or Valentine’s day. We will be back!
Was expecting better foods with the approval rating of this place. The oysters Rockefeller tasted strange. The service was great. Had a party of 6 and had excellent service. Felt the food was way overpriced for what it was. Won’t go back.
Ate at Jay’s this week for the 1st time and was very impressed. Ordered the Oysters, Mussels, Chowder, and had the House Swordfish dish for main course. Everything was very fresh and had great flavor. For sure the best and freshest seafood in Dayton. I will be back!!!
Robbery on the High Seas. Just another legacy restaurant of a bygone era in Dayton, Ohio. Ate there twenty some years ago in its hay day when it truly was a great dining experience. The place is now run down with a stale odor to greet you as you walk in the dilapidated side door. By the extraordinary high prices and run down condition of the place, it is obvious that the owners are more concerned with profit than service and quality. We had ordered crab legs, stuffed lobster, salmon and lobster pasta. The lobster had a slice of kraft cheese melted over the top, if you can call that cheese. For $40 one would expect more. The lobster was way over cooked. The crab legs were so, so and the salmon was not worth the $27. Like the clientele, the waitresses are from a bygone era. Had to request bread, butter, forks for the clams, salad dressing (which she screwed up twice), Crab were so tough we requested a scissors whereupon she brought out some scissors from the back office!!! She has worked there 25 years and never had anyone request scissors to cut the crab leg shells!!!! All in all it is not worth the price you pay. Jays is extremely over priced. Make plans to eat elsewhere unless you want to be sorely disappointed. The seafood dishes at Thai Nine, within walking distance of Jays are much better priced and delicious. All in all it reminded me of other legacy restaurants in Dayton like the Pine Club that are coasting down hill as the owners suck out as much money from their business as they can. A Waffle House fish sandwich would have been better!!!
Pricy with great entertainment and some of the only seafood in Dayton. Jay’s Restaurant is a fantastic place to eat some of the only worthwhile seafood in dayton where you can also enjoy music on the weekends. As a college student It can be difficult to budget but a drink and a bowl of clam chowder is more than satisfying! Puzzle of Lights performs every first friday and is a favorite amongst my Daytonian rooted family. Worth a visit!
Two times me and my boyfriend have tried to dining here. Both times we have received the ultimately the worst service ever. Shame on jays.
