Neighborhood Old-School Tavern. Slyder’s is an old-school, family-owned local tavern serving value-priced pub food and reasonably priced beer. We arrived on a Friday evening around 7:00, just at the back-end of the dinner rush. The place looks like it’s very popular with neighborhood long-time locals. Pretty small single room with 10-12 tables, with a couple large-party tables in a room off the back. Long bar runs along the left side. Opened in 1948, about the only things in it that are post-1980 are the flat-screen tvs and the softball trophies.Service – everyone on staff, from the bartenders managing the patrons coming thru the door to everyone waiting tables, was attentive and accommodating. Something happened to delay one of our dinners, and while the waiter was very apologetic, no offer was made to make up for it. It also took unusually long for a single basket of appetizers to arrive, even factoring in that the place was full on a Friday evening. 4.75Food – Pretty standard small-kitchen tavern menu with an emphasis on the deep fryer. We had an appetizer sampler to start of fried mushrooms, mozz sticks, and chicken fingers along with three dipping sauces (plus ranch) in little plastic cups that clearly came out of a frozen food service bag, but were hot and crispy. My burger itself was large (10 oz., should have had the 7 oz. option) and hand-pattied, but cooked to just barely medium rather than my order of medium-well. Served with standard burger fixings, It was pretty tasty. However, the bun was cold (it might have been previously frozen) and rather dry, so as I ate, it separated into chunks and fell apart. Friday’s special is fried walleye, and I got plenty of that taste with my fries, which had spent the minimum amount of time in the fryer, as they were rather limp, soft, and lukewarm. Yuk. My SO had the walleye, which she reported was hot and tasty, and her fries (a huge portion) were also crispy and hot. We both had all the food we could eat, and then some. Use fresh buns, give them a toast on the grill before serving, and keep the fish and fries apart in different deep fryers, and the food quality would markedly improve. 3.25Drink – We decided to check this place out because our clerk in Belmont Party Supply said they had a great tap selection. Not. The only craft options were a Great Divide winter seasonal, Bell’s Two Hearted, and a Jackie O’s IPA in bottles. Other handles included Guinness, Killian’s, Abita Purple Haze, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel, Blue Moon, Stella, and several of the BMC standards. All the usual suspects in bottles. Several buckets of Bud Lite being served. This is not a place for someone wanting a nice selection of craft beer. OTOH, all our pints were $4.00 each, so if these handles work for you, there’s value to be had at the bar. My read on the crowd is that an edgy beer order is Miller Lite, so simply putting up a Bell’s handle was probably a big step for them. 3.00Misc. – Parking is pretty tight. Tables by the door get blasted by cold air every time the front door opens. The kindest thing that can be said about the bathrooms is that they are tiny and Spartan, although reasonably clean; I heard the women’s doesn’t even have a mirror in it. More than enough tvs for the space. Everything comes in plastic baskets with a paper liner; the only things getting washed are the really cheap silverware and the glasses. Clearly a place for locals and regulars who know each other. 2.25Overall – We were just around the corner, so we decided to try it. I can understand why some people swear by this place, and I suppose if we lived nearby and could figure out what works for us from the menu, how to get the kitchen to make it correctly, and the best times to go so it’s not so busy and overwhelmed, we might make this an option. A dollar goes farther here than in most places. And the burger itself was better than most; it’s just that the cold, broken bun spoiled it. Major props to the staff for their friendly, attentive service even though the kitchen isn’t making it easy on them. At the end of the day, however, we’re not from Dayton and there’s plenty of better, locally owned options we enjoy when we are in the area. 3.00

Better than most bar food. Wings are good. Burgers are huge and pretty tasty. Good sized menu with fair prices. Service has always been good and bartenders are friendly. Cheap beer…clean bathrooms (always a plus) and seems to be busy which indicates they must be doing something right. We thought so too. Only drawback is that they are closed on Sundays.

Choices…which great meal to get.. The Medium sauced wings are so good they rock my world. Meaty chicken wings fried to perfection with a medium sauce that is just right. Mmmm! I also find the turkey club to be the best I have found in Dayton. Their burgers are awesome too. Nice juicy patties, need I say more.

Great Food!. My choice for dinner this month with our monthly dine out couples was, drum roll please, Slyder’w Tavern. Busy little pub, was able to get the last parking place. Arrived a bit after 6pm on a Saturday evening. All tables were taken, but by the time we ordered our drinks, we had a table for 4. Quick on refills, and someone always just walking by checking on us without bothering us. Two of the four ordered burgers, and they enjoyed them immensely. One of us ordered the French dip, very hot and flavorful, just wish they toasted the bun. I had the fish sandwich, hot and tasty, but the onion rings were absolutely fantastic. Crispy, not greasy, just delish! Two of us ate and drank for $22-what a deal!

Slyder’s is a cozy little pub with good food and a pleasant atmosphere. The servers are polite and mindful of your refills. The food is your general pub fare, including great wings, huge burgers, large salads, fish, fries etc. They have an array of appetizers and a modest selection of beer and wines. The owner is almost always on hand and working as much as his employees. He runs a smooth operation even when they are busy ( which is frequent particularly on Weekend nights). If you want good food from a local pub with nice atmosphere, try Slyder’s.

Old School Belmont – good simple pub grub. Slyder’s Tavern on a Saturday at dinner time is like a Normal Rockwell version of Belmont: all age groups, from toddlers through superannuated seniors are represented. You’d almost think that you walked through a time portal into economically vibrant 1960s Dayton. One thing to note is that Slyder’s is SMALL, and many of the tables are absolutely tiny. The place was packed and we had to wait a bit at the bar for a table. Tanks has a lot more room to sit and eat (when you can get a table, that is.)All of the help is exceptionally friendly, welcoming and proactive. We got seated as quickly as possible, and the staff was right on everything we asked for. The food is great for what it is. It is elementary pub food – burgers, sandwiches, a couple of salads, one wrap. There are very few individual menu items over $7 – salads, the large orders of wings, and some 10 oz burgers. Interestingly, they have no steaks, no plate dinners of any kind, and no fish or shrimp. I ordered a patty melt. It was superbly seared and was the thickest patty melt (7 oz. burger) I have ever eaten. My dinner companion had the jumbo sampler platter and reported that everything was excellent. Only one mishap – an old guy at the bar almost fell on our table getting up out of his seat. 🙁

Tasty and cheap!. The burgers are delicious here–juicy enough to require an extra napkin. The patty melt is to die for, tons of swiss cheese, sauteed onions, and buttery grilled rye bread. Wings are also tasty! Beer is cold and cheap, and service is excellent. What more could you ask for?
