Looking for something local while on a visit to Dayton, we first went to City BBQ, but quickly left since it’s a chain and quite sterile. Next on my list was Cross Roads, and am glad we switched. It’s certainly a local place, and they’re smoking their Q out in the back. Although it’s small (the mirror wall fooled me into thinking there was another room till I saw myself) we had no problem getting a high top and reviewing the menu. They have more than Q, but the smell and our desires took us to a full rack of baby backs (dry) with green beans, slaw and a basket of sweet potato fries. They have 2 craft beers on tap, and we each had the IPA. The beer was an unfiltered, hoppy brew with citrus tastes. Pretty good. Our service was OK, except for the period of time when she left (I’m guessing for a smoke) and I think our food was ready. On to the food. The ribs were about the meatiest babies I’ve had. Very good on the smoke flavor. A nice light bark with moist meat. Just the way they should be. They have a selection of sauces that covered several different tastes. Nice. However, all the sides were a bit of a disappointment, so I’ve knocked off 1/2 to 3/4 of a star. Slaw was food service and a little on the old side with a bit of an off smell and taste. Green beans had some ham, but little flavor. Sweet potato fries were food service crinkle cut processed. Not a good version considering what we are used to getting in our home area. But, that said, I’d certainly go back for more Q, just go light on the sides.
