Good Basic Barbecue. As a certified BBQ hound, I must seek out and try all barbecue. For a while, CityQ was my favorite. We probably ate there 40 or 50 times. I always enjoyed the pulled pork and a side order of greens brimming with juice and meat shreds (available seasonally). My spousal unit likes the cornbread, pork, and fries. We both enjoyed the vinegar cole slaw, a new option. The best array of sauces in town includes a rare (for Toledo) mustard-based option, along with a vinegary-pepper sauce, and more traditional, thick, tomato-based sauces, hot and mild. For good food, I was always willing to put up with the smoke that permeated my clothing. Plan to wash whatever you’re wearing when you get home. The casual atmosphere was always comfortable: wooden picnic tables, a roll of paper towels on the table in lieu of napkins, and country music on the sound system. In keeping with the extremely casual nature of the place, the tables always seem to need cleaning, and there’s a bit of a fly problem. But it’s kind of like eating BBQ outdoors — one takes one’s chances, and enjoys the food.2012 update: This year, for the 4th of July, I picked up a combo plate (ribs, pork, chicken, brisket) with slaw and greens as side orders. We eventually made four meals out of it — a real bargain at $4 off, the usual Monday sampler discount.
