Their salsa is excellent, which is why I gave La Chalupa 2 stars. Unfortunately, that was their only saving grace. My boyfriend and I are vegetarian and ordered the bean nachos, but were given beef and bean. Didn’t realize this until after a bite. The beef and beans were very, very low quality. Seasoned well enough, but loaded far too heavily with queso. There was about half an inch of this melted glob of cheese in the center and no veg to speak of. We shared a combo plate with one enchilada and one chimichanga. Almost half the plate was a puddle – yes, a PUDDLE – of refried beans. The enchilada was inedible. The sauce tasted like a disgusting combination of taco sauce and Italian marinara. The chimichanga was okay enough to eat, but bad enough to not order again. It was a fried soft taco shell topped with refried beans, diluted guacamole, shaved lettuce, and one slice of an under-ripe tomato. It was only okay after pouring their outstanding salsa on it, and not exactly a chimichanga by real terms. We also ordered frozen strawberry margaritas that were far too strong with bottom shelf tequila. La Chalupa is owned by El Camino’s, so no surprise there. The salsa is fresh and homemade and delicious though, so I have some hope left for their homemade guacamole, which is not what they serve with meals.
