It was a sunny Sunday and I went digging for gold and certainly found it here. The place is in an old train station and simply put, is really neat inside and out for that matter. When it warms up they have a patio. You are warmly greeted when you walk in and they have a very efficient ordering system and the serve yourself system works well. The pulled pork was smoked to perfection and they had a rack of homemade sauces to suit any taste. The sides (nice selection) were great, but one must try the green beans with bacon. You get far more than just beans and bacon the way they are prepared. The honey cornbread (muffins) were great as well. While you are enjoying this place a train circles on tracks overhead. Just a delightful place.
This was not the first time I’d dined in the old Madeira train station building, which had previously hosted Choo Choo’s with its model train running overhead in the dining room, but it was my first visit to the recently openedDepot Barbecue. While they’ve kept the overhead electric train, it’s obvious that they sank a bit of money intocleaning and sprucing up the quaint oldbuilding.Upon entering, I was greeted by friendly young staff working at the counter. I ordered the burnt ends after one described their preparation. When they generously offered to let me try free samples of their sides, I asked to sample the potato salad, which had little flavor and was not prepared with mustard as I prefer. One of the staff then volunteered that the mac and cheese was his personal favorite, so I ordered that. The burnt ends (that I ordered on cinnamon bread) tasted pretty good, but not as fresh as I’d expected. The mac and cheese had even less flavor than the potato salad, a problem that I addressed by repeatedly adding a lot of salt and pepper to the top surface as I ate, even though I rarely find it necessary to add them at a restaurant. While the food was (or could be rendered by adding salt and pepper) satisfactory, I found the dining experience unpleasant because the chairs were awkwardly too low for the table height, and they all appear to be in the same proportion. I strongly urge management to address this issue. My overall impression about Depot Barbecue is that the management and staff are inexperienced and still in the process of inventing their business. I plan to give them a couple of months to sort things out before returning to give them another try.
