My favorite Japanese cafe and grocery store. Sushi and food are fresh and fairly price for casual-quick meal.

Best since Japan. I have eaten Japanese all over the US, including some of the more up-scale restaurants in NYC. I will be so bold to say that Tensuke is some of the best shoyu ramen I have had since living in Japan. The curry is also very authentic to Japanese curry. I have not had the soba (because I am too busy ordering ramen), but have heard good things from my friends who have. The only thing that has let me down is the gyoza. That is because I have had some of the best fried gyoza in the world and it is almost impossible to live up to. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes authentic Japanese food.

Holy smokes, this place is crowded on Sundays! But I love it!

For the Love of Soba…. Tensuke Express is a fun and quick noodle shop and caf attached to the side of Tensuke Market — Columbus’ premier Japanese market. Though there is a separate door to the restaurant, I’d advise a stroll through the market itself on the way in, just to get a look at the fresh seafood and variety of produce being offered. Personally, I find it very difficult to pass through the market without buying something, but I guess that’s for a separate review… Tensuke Express is located in the Kenny Centre Shopping Plaza off Old Henderson, next to Akai Hana, and parking is plentiful outside. Upon entering, you’ll immediately notice the soothing blue dcor inspired by the ocean, as well as the massive cylindrical aquarium (with seats all around, nonetheless) stocked with a variety of tropical fish. You order and pay at the counter, and they’ll hand you a flashing pager that will alert you when it is time to pick up your food. The wait is usually 5-10 minutes. The seating area is small and relatively cramped, but this normally only presents an issue around the busy lunch hour on the weekends. Although the staff and patrons are primarily Japanese, don’t be intimidated. Everyone working speaks English and they are more than happy to answer any questions you might have about the menu with the utmost courtesy. As far as the food, the heart of the menu is the noodles – Soba and Udon, to be exact. You can order your noodles grilled (yaki), served cold (zara) or in a bowl of soup. If going the soup route, you can order the noodles by themselves, but I’d recommend going for one of the combination platters, which consists of the bowl of noodles with a mini-bowl of one of the other entrees being offered, such as Chicken Teriyaki, BBQ Eel, or Shrimp Tempura. Sides include other Japanese favorites such as Tako Yaki (Octopus), Gyoza Dumplings, Curry Rice, and Chicken Karaage. There is also a rotating daily special listed on the board by the register – my favorite being the Udon in Kimchee broth – as well as a recently-expanded section of the menu that now includes a Ramen bowl. All dishes are very reasonably priced at less than $7 each, even including the combinations. If you’re in the mood for sushi as opposed to noodles, there is a sushi counter one room over in what is technically the market itself. Though the sushi menu isn’t extensive, the ingredients all come from the market and the fish is as fresh as you can get in Columbus. Tensuke Express does not have a liquor license, however, so ordering Sake is unfortunately off-limits (the market has an excellent selection though). In addition, if you find yourself here on a Saturday or Sunday during the summer season, you’re in for a special treat. They have a food cart set up just outside on the sidewalk selling Okonomiyaki, what are referred to as either Japanese-style pancakes or Japanese pizzas. If you’ve never had one, these are worth the trip by themselves. To summarize, Tensuke Express is a great casual option for a taste of Japanese cuisine without having to venture into either the Fine-dining or Americanized take-out arenas. And remember, despite what you’re mother told you, slurping your noodles is perfectly acceptable. Enjoy.Must-try dish: Soba Noodles w/BBQ Eel Mini-bowl

Depends on the day…. I have been going to Tensuke for about ten years now (back when it was Seafood Japan) and have always had consistently good food. When the market next door open, I was excited to have ramen at the ready. My first few trips were very good; the karaage was nice and gingery and I was very happy with my miso soup and rice was cooked perfectly. My last trip, a few days ago, I was disappointed to find my ramen’s base was not incorporated; a thick sludge of miso sat in the bottom, and the pork was delicious, but did not meld with the broth. My friend and I split an order of karaage and found that this time around, they were well-cooked, but had no flavor – just well-fried chicken nuggets. Hopefully the next time I go, the Japanese staff will be cooking.
