Just OK. J’s has lost it’s luster. I used to think J’s was one of the best. Orlando, Louisville, Columbus were all good at one time. Bottom line is they need to reinvent themselves. When the food is just ok, thats not good enough. $30.00 for a tough marinated steak and luke warm mashed potatoes is just not worth it. When in Cincinnati try any the large assortment of restaurants including the Capital Grill.
A little over booked. I recently visited the Norwood location, and i have to say it was not great. I ordered a bottle of wine that when it was brought out to the table it was already opened. So how was i to know the wine in the bottle was the correct wine. I asked my server the vintage year of a wine and the wine i received was not the wine i ordered. My server never introduced herself ,she just came over and took a drink order and left for 15 min another server brought our drinks. The appetizer we ordered came and 4 min later the salads came. We were very rushed to get in and get out. We spent $200.00 and at the end of the meal i just wanted to leave.I am not sure if they were under staffed, because our section had 4 different servers waiting on tables.. We are not local and wont ever be back. Its just a shame because i heard such great things about the restaurant, and that location failed.
Pleasant dining. J. Alexanders consistently offers a very pleasant dining experience, thanks primarily to its softly lighted dark-wood ambiance, its friendly, professional servers and its comfortable seating and tables that are large enough to relax and spread out. The menu promises nothing original or unique, but its American fare is predictable and generally well-executed. Presentation is a plus even though its web site chooses not to reveal its actual menu, it flashes a sequence of photos of a few lovely food presentations. As for what’s on the real menu, just think meat and potatoes, salads and the ubiquitous soup djour, and full service bar.Overall, J. Alexanders offers excellent value.
Most Consistent Restaurant. This the most consistent restaurant in Cincinnati! The Prime Rib and Wild Alaskan Salmon never disappoint. Their carrot cake is absolutely the best ever (this includes BonBonerie and Cheesecake Factory). My only recommendation is to order the rice pilaf instead of the orzo rice that is served cold (kind of like cold mashed potatoes). Also, several people in my family miss the Rattlesnake Pasta that is no longer on the Cincinnati menu.
I’ve been a fan of this place since it opened. The prices seem high but I ALWAYS have enough to take home. Salads are amazing and they don’t use any extra potent preservative that most places do – I know because when they do my tummy is NOT happy. Chicken soup is also really good. However, like everywhere else, it seems they’re cooks are ahead of the orders or they’re microwaving stuff. Had the prime rib last time, which was cooked excellently – really EXCELLENTLY, but it came out on the chilly side. I didn’t send it back because it was so good I hardly noticed. And the mound of potatoes was really good too! Service was much improved since the last time I went, they used to reach across you to fill your drink when you’d take three sips out of it. The atmosphere is lovely and even though we were sitting near the window we were cozy warm.
Overpriced & underwelmed. Went here for a business lunch. Once you get over the pricing, you would assume that a $15 lunch plate would be well executed. The shrimp taco platter was a joke. The shrimp were breaded and flavorless, straight from your grocer’s freezer case. The slaw and sprouts that topped the shrimp was tasteless. It could have be shredded cardboard. There are tons of other places that offer better value and better execution. I won’t be taking any clients here in the future.
Dinner. My husband and i love J. Alexander’s. we go for special occasions, and have never been let down! the decor is very warm and inviting, the food is excellent, and the service is exceptional!
