The food here is simple, cooked to order, inexpensive, and decently good — but that isn’t the main reason I think you should visit this place. Its the ambienceSeriously. But PaT, you ask, isn’t this place nestled inside an old and somewhat decrepit bowling alley? Why yes, yes it is — and walking into this joint is like walking into a slice of the 1950s or 60’s – like a lunch counter from those times, with the look, the feel, and the eats to match. They’re not playing at presenting this look, like modern retro joints do, it simply _is_ like something out of a almost forgotten memory. It is just something you simply have to see.I had a simple cheeseburger (3.50, which includes a bag of Husman’s chips), griddled up fresh right in front of me when I ordered it, with grilled onions without extra cost, bun grilled without me asking. It was nothing fancy, no special beef blends or seasonings, just a really fresh, really good cheeseburger, wrapped in think white paper as I remember being done long ago at other lunch counters I had been to as a child I also had a cheese coney (1.75) – better than average. The bun was exceedingly fresh, and the chili was a solidly good representation of the Cincinnati styleA lot of the menu is breakfast items, but they do not serve those after 11am, which I think is unfortunate. It was clear from reading the menu while I waited for my food to be freshly prepared that they have a house specialty called Marcellas Mud Beans. I think it is a soup, but I forgot to ask. I am not a big fan of beans but I’d be curious to hear from anyone who has tried these. I found a facebook pic of a bowl of it on the Madison Bowl facebook page, but I cant post a link in a review, so you’ll need to go find it yourselfThere is plenty of parking in the Madison Bowl lot. Prices are pretty much dirt cheap. Service was extremely friendly and accommodating. Recommended
Date Night at MadBowl. My husband and I love to order from the Diner and eat in the bar. The little diner reminds me of Bennett’s Drug Store back in my hometown decades ago, but don’t let the size fool you for the menu options are plenty and the staff are super friendly. The bar has a cozy and warm vibe with the lighting, booths and retro decor, maybe has been there as long as Kay the bartender has. There are three flat screens, two for Keno and one for news and sports. We tend to go mid to late afternoon, so usually no one has the Juke box playing then. A few Saturdays ago after we went to The Festival of Lights, we headed to MadBowl, being the holidays, we played Vince Guaraldi in the jukebox, how romantic. We are fans of the Easa Burger (see photo). Tonight I thought that there could have been a bit more homemade tarter sauce, but that hardly stopped us from devouring them. You will need cash for the bar although the diner accepts cards.
