Dive in for a quick bite while enjoying the West Side Market, as it was lunchtime the wait was log for a table or sit at the bar now, which we elected to do. The bartender/waitress was great, but the place is small, tight and extremely loud. The GF tried chicken and waffles for the second time ever and liked the cornmeal based waffle while the chicken was very strange in texture, perhaps wayyyy over marinated? Rubbery and not of this planet would be an accurate description? My shrimp and grits were decent, though needed some hot sauce to enhance the flavor. With a few beers and an iced tea, just over $40 w/tip, which was reasonable, but wouldn’t entice a specific return trip.

Good food. I disagree with the previous review about sausage gravy and eggs, which in my case were served over rosemary toast and were delicious. The sausage and bread used were very good, no doubt from the market. The morning I went was not very busy, which may account for the difference. The Market Cafe has a very intriguing menu yet is a humble place, giving me the impression that a big shot chef collaborated on the menu. Because the execution of my breakfast, and that of my companion, was just fine I would like to go back for lunch sometime. Service was friendly though a little slow (no good excuse, really) and cleanliness was hit and miss in the dining room. I got a peek at the kitchen and it looked ok. The bathroom setup was confusing, so I decided to wait.Overall, I had an impression of ‘absentee owner’. Or maybe it’s just ‘Cleveland Funky’. Good place to try, though.

Simple breakfast. We all ate at the West Side Market Caf this morning. I had the biscuits with eggs and sausage gravy. It was not much to look at and nothing to write home about, but it wasn’t bad. It was filling and sufficiently tasty. The atmosphere is kind of simple and basic caf decor. And you have to get a key to use their bathroom … which was awkward. But overall, I had no real complaints.

Hamburger. Had the hamburger and it was so good. I asked about the ground beef and they buy it at Fosters in the market.. Going this weekend and buying some for sure!

I greatly enjoyed my shrimp tacos. However, the rest of my group was disapointed. Cold soup, burgers not cooked to order, and very slow service

Disappointing!!!. Went to Market Cafe for breakast. Seated right away but waited a while to order. Waited 40 minutes for our food, whereas tables around us were being served much quicker. We had to ask for water twice. We were served cold chipped beef with a layer of crust over it(from sitting under warmer), lukewarm waffles with puddles of liquid cream on top(previously whipped), the wrong toast with my omelette, and a bowl of COLD hash browns that were clearly just pulled out of the cooler. I am talking ice cold bowl and potatoes! Not only should the kitchen be blamed for sending food out like that, but the waitress for handing us food that was so obviously not up to par, especially after making us wait so long. And maybe the rest of the staff, for not noticing that our food was sitiing in the kitchen that long. We approached the manager after our meal to inform him of our issues. He said the waitress was new and to try them again in the future. She definately needs more training. We won’t take a chance again since we drove 20 minutes to go there and left very disappointed.
