Chili Time is an OK diner that serves a good breakfast, OK chili, not-so-OK hamburgers, and lots of other diner foods. St. Bernard, being a small town that’s landlocked with no space to grow beyond its current boundaries, is a fairly closed community where everyone seems to know everyone else as neighbors or family and gathers at Chili Time to enjoy meals in this familiar venue. Nothing on the menu appears to be homemade, and nothing really inspired, but the service is solid, fast and friendly, and it’s affordable. Loyal customers congregating at Chili Time can make it fairly crowded during peak chow times.
For a place called Chili Time, I was surprised at how much I disliked the chili, but the plate lunch specials are pretty goodChili Time is a large single-location casual eatery that combines old-school diner type food with Cincinnati-style chili. Ambience is minimal, you sit where you want, and food is delivered quickly from a surprisingly lengthy menuThe chili itself, although it looks and smells the part, and also has the right mouthfeel, is watery and somewhat sour. That said, although I did not care for the chili, I was glad to see you could get a cup of it as a side item on any menu item including a choice of side. Most places like this one do not offer such an optionI was also not too impressed with the breakfast items, which (+) are served all day here. Also on the plus side, goetta is available as a breakfast meat, but on the minus side the hash browns are not shredded potatoes but instead a hash of chopped potato and mashed potatoes, which were unseasoned. That said, I realize that the customer base here skews older, so they may be leaving salt off most items to leave the salt levels up to the customer. The biscuit in the biscuits and gravy was clearly from a box, and the gravy was bland and nearly as thick as gelatin. What I did really like was their meatloaf special. This is available on Thursdays only, comes with a very good gravy, real (near as I could tell) mashed potatoes, choice of a second side, and a dinner roll. Not life changing or anything, just really, really good in a stick-to-your-ribs kinda way.Deseertwise, I’ve tried their lemon meringue and their chocolate cream, which were OK but both made elsewhere, so skip those. On the other hand, they have a special dessert made in house where puff pastry is wrapped around raspberry and cream cheese, deep fried, and coated in powered sugar. These are served piping hot form the fryer and are very, very good. Go for these instead.Service is very fast and very friendly. Some of the waitresses will chat you up if it isn’t too busy, and it is clear they have a lot of regulars. They have their own parking lot with plenty of spaces. For nightowls looking for something other than white castles – they are open 6am to 4am 6 days a week, and from 9am to 4am on Sundays.I will be stopping by next for their beef tips over noodles, which is the Wednesday special.
