Excellent and unbelievably affordable sandwich. I am writing this piece simply about an excellent fish sandwich that Long John’s (LJS) served my son and me from their Drive-In window. We have eaten at LJS several times before, and usually have found their platters affordably priced, but their dinner menu tends to be somewhat limited in terms of being essentially fried chicken and seafood in different combinations. However, I was in for a very pleasant surprise this afternoon when I went to their Drive-In with my son (after his summer HS class) to pick up 2 fish sandwiches for the price of one (using a coupon). I was rather taken aback when I heard that my bill was a paltry $1.59. If that was the price of a fish sandwich, I was convinced it must be a tiny little thing, sort of like a White Castle slider. As a result, before the sandwich was delivered, I asked the young lady at the drive-in window to double our order. The young lady at the window was very pleasant, and offered us 4 sandwiches for the price of 2 – using the same coupon. Thus, my bill came to all of $ 3.18 for 4 fish sandwiches! I could not believe the deal, and while driving home, kept thinking that these must be small fish sliders.Well, it turned out that the LJS fish sandwich was actually much bigger than what McDonalds sells for more than $ 3.50. In fact, absolutely no other fast food place (including Rally’s) sells anything remotely close to this value. What clinched the complete winner in this case was that LJS did not skimp in the least on their amazingly low-priced deal: a very good-size white fish fillet; an excellent hoagie-style sesame-seed bun, generous shredded lettuce and tartar sauce. It was piping hot, and absolutely outstanding in taste. I have no idea how LSJ did this; it was a home-run way out of the ball park. Great job, Long Johns; I will get this sandwich and try other drive-in fares, even if I do not have any coupon handy. I only wish there were an LSJ near the University where I work.
