Kengo is the best restaurant in Toledo. The place is very small small and is first come first serve, except for the omakase which seats up to 5. The quality of fish is better than any other place around the area and the yakitori selection is diverse and has a good mix of non meat options as well. The wait staff has also always been very friendly and helpful when I have been there. I could not recommend this place enough.
Omakase! My husband treated me to Omakase at Kengo just last night. It was exciting to leave our meal up to the chef to see what he would come up with next. The food was great and if it wasn’t for the loud atmosphere I would have given it an extra half star. Omakase will set you back $85 a person and they only allow for 5 people to be served Omakas at once. Our meal lasted 1.5 hours and the service was good. Chef started us off with an offering of three small plates on a bamboo box consisting of an octopus dish, a tuna dish and an oyster. My husband really enjoyed the octopus. It was the first time he had tried it and he really like the texture. Each of those dishes was very tasty. We next had two soups, one being a fried fish and edamame patty topped with pureed daikon radish in a heavily soy sauced, but very tasty gingery broth and the other soup consisting of a cherry stone clam in a broth similar to the fish cake soup. We were served several Yakatori skewers one after another. There was chicken thigh (very good), shiitake mushrooms (one of my favorite offerings of the night), chicken meatballs (eh), & pork belly (my husbands favorite and one of my top three dishes). Then came the nigiri…two or three different types of tuna, one each of salmon, uni, madai, and last but not least Wagyu beef. The standout here, in my opinion, were the tuna selections and the Wagyu beef, which we never had before and were amazed that it was beef. Chef ended the meal with a spicy tuna maki roll. It wasn’t the best spicy tuna roll I’ve ever had, but it wasn’t bad either. The experience was great and it was a wonderful birthday treat from my husband to me which made it even better. As I read elsewhere, if you’re a foodie, you should try it at least once!
