This small cafe hit the spot when I went in for lunch. I had never had food like this and was very pleased with my experience. I would recomend to anyone who loves cafe style food.
Over the years we have dined here with many friends, the Winds have always been a great dining experience we all know they have a absolutely a second great offering at the Meadowlark,we do dine there more since its in our neighborhood, but we do want to experience the Winds again!
Though I had been twice for dinner in August, receiving slow service and average food but a nice atmosphere, I trusted the word of colleagues who (believing I unfortunately ordered the wrong dishes both times) assured me that The Winds was the best Yellow Springs had to offer. However, after my last attempt I will never go back. I am a prof at a local university; I was entertaining a visiting guest and prof from the U of Michigan and was hoping to treat her to a nice meal on the patio. She is a brilliant, kind woman who happens to be Black. I mention this only because we received very unusual treatment from the host, a haughty, dismissive attitude which both of us believed was racist. He ignored my guest’s simple question about the patio (we’d spotted two tables empty outside) and horrifyingly looked right past her and spoke to the couple standing behind us as if she hadn’t said anything to him. She tried to speak to him again and this time he brusquely answered her but did not look at her–he actually spoke to the air next to her. It was very blatant and shocking. We had a reservation. Many tables were empty when we arrived. We had patiently and cheerfully stood in the lobby for ten minutes with no one at the host stand. When he finally arrived to seat us there were four couples waiting. They all witnessed the treatment. He had no problems meeting their eyes or mine. As he seated the woman in front if us on the patio we simply and quietly left…after the couple behind us acknowledged that his strange rudeness to my guest had been obvious and shocking to them also. I have to say, I didn’t trust my own perceptions–I was so caught off guard. I have never been so embarrassed at a restaurant. We were dressed to the nines but deflated. I fought back the urge to force him to attend to his behavior by getting loud and defending her honor, but my guest was too gracious to allow it. I wish I had confronted him. What a mistake the Winds is making to have him as the the face of their restaurant. I will never go back and have told other professors with visiting lecturers and speakers to be wary.
Excellent food but be sure you allow plenty of time as the service is very, VERY slow. They commit the to-me unpardonable restaurant sin of making you wait forever to get the bill paid. I have eaten there twice and the same problem both times.
My favorite place to eat in Ohio . I have been driving an hour from Cincinnati to eat here regularly for 20 years.
Service and food disappointing. As far back as 1994 or so, I fell in love with the Winds. As a graduate student, I loved coming into town for a hike and a great meal. When I was a newlywed, my spouse and I would come to the Winds for romantic dinners. Later it became our favorite place for Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrations and hikes with our kids, grandparents, et al. I would urge people to make the drive from Cincinnati just to eat there My, how things have changed. I ate at the Winds maybe 2-3 years ago and was really disappointed. I figured it was just a fluke. It was Mother’s Day–they had been slammed….maybe it was just a bad day, right? Just two weeks ago I tried it again with a friend. We had the whole afternoon to spend and were in no rush…and yet….Even with a reservation and MANY tables sitting vacant, we waited in the lobby for 15 minutes. It was very strange as no one was really at the hostess/host stand. Once seated, our drink order was not taken for at least 10-15 minutes…then took a REALLY long time to arrive. Ditto on the food order and the arrival of the food. coffee refills and hot water (for tea) was not forthcoming either. It was NOT very busy in the restaurant so why the horribly sluggish service? My pancakes were heavy and nothing special. My glass of juice was fine but not worth the cost (it wasn’t even fresh-squeezed so why the crazy prices?) My friend main dish was average but the fruit bowl was really interesting….it had a rotten (is in gray in color) strawberry right on top AND a piece of honeydew RIND in the bowl.We both know a lot about food (she runs a restaurant) so yeah, maybe we have high standards, but the Winds historically has been a foodie haven. On this day, neither of us was looking for haute cuisine…we just wanted a basic, delicious breakfast, our drinks kept hot and somewhat efficient service. Our server seemed confused. The whole staff seemed confused. Have they changed ownership or something? So sad to say, but I won’t be back. There are better breakfast joints in Yellow Springs….and certainly in Cinci…for a fraction of the cost.
We’re changing our vote. The service has steadily declined the last 4-5 times we’ve been there. Reservations seem pointless, as we have to wait up to an hour to be seated. The actual food is good. However WAY overpriced, especially when there are equivocal eateries, some better, in the Dayton area, for much less.
