The Hammett HouseI have lived in Claremore the great majority of my life. The Hammett House has just always been there at the foot of the Will Rogers Memorial. I have had lunch and dinner here so many times Ive lost count. Comfort food served at its best and the place to go after a Sunday morning sermon at church. While Ive had just about everything on their menu, I still cant bring myself to order the veggie burger no matter how good Bill says it is on his menu. Tonight was date night with the wife and this is what I had for review.Ice tea no sugar with lemon. Their ice tea is always fresh and has never been bitterPamper fried pork chopsScandinavian meatball soup as apposed to the salad choice.Red skin mashed potatoes with gravy.Dessert: Sizzlinapple delightThe Scandinavian meatball soup was delivered first. Small cup with a dense but smooth vegetable soup base that contains green bell peppers and onions and three meatballs. Very tasty! The PF chops arrived on a platter, piping hot from the skillet sided by healthy baseball sized serving of red skin mashed potatoes covered in a white cream gravy. The chops (2) were perfectly fried as always. Crisp and lightly seasoned flour crust surrounds these two tender boneless beauties. There is also a cranberry relish served with these chops. Made with whole cranberries, chopped English walnut( my guess)and has a orange citrus overtone probably from candied orange peel or zest. Either way it works very well with the pork. Fresh rolls were served, however we didnt touch them. Had to save room for desert. The Sizzlin apple delight. The name itself makes me salivate, Its almost sinister because it does things to your brains reward center, so you remember exactly what it was you ate, when you ate it, where you got it and how do you get some more? It attacks multiple sensory organs before you even get to taste it.First you hear it coming, sounds like a pan full of frying bacon. Then you see it, steam rolling from the Lodge skillet to which its placed. Then you smell it as its placed in front of you or the person next to you who was fortunate enough to get one first. Homemade apple pie, vanilla ice cream, brandy butter sauce caramelizing in a hot skillet Oh my! The owner has a sign in the lobby that says this Life is short, eat desert first, I dont know who said it first, but I would say it was on his second visit to The Hammett House. My wife and I were in town for the afternoon and stopped here to eat. We both had the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatos and gravy followed by a shared piece of peanuy butter chocolate chip pie. It was one of the best meals we’ve eaten out in a VERY long time. Everything was hot and homemade. Delicious! If you haven’t eaten here, you should try it.

Terrible Meal!. Went there for a special occasion. My husband ordered Grilled Chicken Pasta Primavera, advertised on the menu to have steamed fresh vegetables, fettuccini, and a creamy alfredo sauce. The chicken was tough, there was absolutely NO sauce on the fettuccini, and the steamed fresh vegetables were a couple of chunks of red onion, and a few leaves of something green. $14 and my husband left more than half of his meal uneaten. I ordered the 10 ounce Rib Eye steak, advertised on the menu as Hand-cut USDA Choice beef, considered one of the most flavorful steaks. I agree as Rib Eye is the most flavorful and my favorite. My 10 oz. steak looked like it had been hammered flat. I ordered it medium rare, but it was so flat that you could cook it through from one side. There was absolutely no flavor and it was tough. I did get a nice large wad of fat that was not edible. We had two others in our party, one ordering the blacked talipia, and it was okay. The other ordered a steak and it was tough. We spent $130 total, and the meal was not worth $25. Such a disappointment and the pies were not that good either. Very little flavor in the Coconut Cream Pie or the Key Lime Pie. We could not taste coconut or lime. Won’t go back. Don’t waste your money. We were there at 11:00 on a Sunday morning, just as they opened. I would never go when they are busy if they cannot do any better than what we received!

Awesome food. I drive three hours from OKC just to eat here as often as I can. The chicken fried steak is awesome and dessert is also great. I have been here when service was a bit slow, but never as slow as these people writing these reviews are saying. I think even if it was rated 5 stars, there would always be somebody with a negative comment. I have been known to drive many miles out of the way for fine food, and this place is no exception.

Good food. My favorite thing from here is the Hot Hamburger. It is really good. I also really love their Waffle fries. I have also had the Hammett House Burger, which is just a plain hamburger. The HH burger is not so great. The service is pretty slow. You have to stand in the waiting area and it’s a few minutes before the hostess comes to get you and then once you are seated, it’s again a few minutes before a server comes to your table. I have a had a couple of good servers and one of them actually remembered that my boyfriend and I ate their a week before, so that was nice. So overall, good food, not so good service.

Bad Food. On March 18th our group of RV’ers went to the Hammett House. Many in our group ordered Chicken Fried Steak that they are supposively known for. Everyone that ordered it was disappointed. It seemed the meat had been precooked before, then breaded and fried again. Breading was not even attached to the meat. Breading was very over spiced. Meat was tough, and hard. Mashed potatoes were very bland tasting. Gravey was a mix. Certainly NOT a Rte. 66 icon restaurant. Vegetable soup, and rolls were good. Others said their other food selections was so-so. Service was good. We will not eat at this restaurant again.
