Old-time BBQ shack. This is a barbecue joint from the old days. You’ll wonder whether the building will remain standing while you’re there. You’ll also breathe a sigh of relief that all ordering is done from outside at the window overlooking the added-on porch. You may eat at the picnic table on that porch, but most people carry out. The grade of meat harkens back to the old days when barbecuing was a way to make cheaper and therefore lesser cuts more palatable. The beef contains much more fat than many folks are used to these days. The pork ribs are a little tough. While the old sign advertises hot links, Big Smokey doesn’t sell them any longer. The mild BBQ sauce is slighly sweet and thin. The hot BBQ sauce is fairly tame but has a noticeable spiciness. If you order a sandwich, don’t plan on eating it out of hand. There’s too much sauce and grease infiltrating the bun for that. This is pretty much just a meat vendor, so plan to take care of drinks and sides elsewhere. This is not 23rd Street’s premiere barbecue place, but it’s interesting to travel back to a time when all BBQ came from places like this.
