My dad came to OBU as a Freshman in 1925. He started eating at the HBK in ’27. I was born in ’41 and started eating at the HBK around ’45. Still eating there today. The hamburgers are the best in town. Boom-a-rang is close but still second. The pie cannot be beat. Not in Shawnee…….not anywhere !
Great cheeseburger crispy tater tots and an overall great atmosphere! The service is awesome and everyone is so friendly! We got pie to go also it was also pretty good, but I really could have gone for another cheeseburger!
A feel good place. This is the kind of place Boomerang tries to be like. This place has the old diner feel and the pedigree to go with it. They have taken those years or experience and used them to hone their culinary skills. They server great hamburgers, fries, onion rings, and even chicken strips. But to me, what really makes them special is the pie. They have the best pie of any restaurant I’ve eaten at, homemade from the crust up.Top it off with friendly staff and it makes it one of the few places I like to dine in at. Definitely worth a try, even if it’s just a slice of pie.
Dive, but not greasy. This is one of those rare iconic cafes that has been there for close to 100 years, doing pretty much the same thing they did then, make really good hamburgers and other foods. Homemade pies (only $2.50/slice), great burgers… and Other Sandwiches. Our waitress was around when we needed her, friendly and helpful. The place, which seats about 70, was SRO at 2 p.m., which tells you a lot about what the locals think about the place. We loved our sandwiches, they definitely do not use the boxed beef that others have switched to. Which is why they were SRO at 2 p.m. It was summer, I had the Chicken Salad, which was served on toast with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle on the side, and really delicious potato wedges. My dining partner had the Kicker, which is essentially a burger with pepper jack cheese and jalapenos… We’ll be back. Loved the phones, too.
FYI- The Bacon Cheeseburger Basket with mayo and pickles only is what Jesus serves in Heaven.
What do I do with the phones?!. It was long ago, and the first time I’ve ever seen this. I had not clue what to do with the phones. I picked it up – no dial tone. Um… okay. Asked someone – that’s how you order. Ah, the things lost on the youth of today. I think I ended up ordering from a waitress anyway.Food was typical diner. Greasy and delicious. Service was average. Was fairly clean inside. What more can I say? Go have fun!
Great experience. You go to Hamburger King for the experience of ordering using the phone at your table and for the pies. It is an old fashioned grill (flat top) with burgers, potato wedges, and chili.16 Aug, 2013Old Times.
