Steak. Beef. If it’s what you want for dinner, Go here!
Smithfields— a place to budget for every month. I have not done a review in a while, but this place is worthy of a review. I had breakfast there and now dinner there, too. Each time I was exteremly happy. The chef brings an interesting flavor to every plate. The cocktails are awesome. The appetizers are fantastic, and the main courses are worth the money. I will be back as much as possible. Finally, a place I look forward to eating at in the rouge valley! I rave about it to friends and relatives. It’s an excellent dining experience.
Disappointing. Damn it. Seriously. Restaurant No. 2 in Ashland that I REALLY wanted to give four stars, but can’t because of spotty service (Larks was the first.)The staff here switch up duties, it seems, with servers mainly doing food, and another doing drinks. They would simultaneously disappear in the full restaurant, then pop up again as people were leaving. The end of service was unforgivable. 20 minutes to get our undercooked beignets, while we watched the line and wait staff wrap up for the night or wander off for smokes. The food:The food is mostly delightful. For app #1, we had the charcuterie board; the standouts were the duck prosciutto and seared pork belly. So rich and salty and delicious. We also had the steak tartare, which was frankly lacking in seasoning. Some sea salt helped it, and the quail egg on top was perfectly poached. The mains! So GOOD! I had one of the best restaurant rib-eyes I’ve ever had, with horseradish mashed potatoes (grainy and dry…sad face) topped with truffle butter. Little side-note to the chef: Please don’t cut my ribeye for me. That’ll get you shot in Texas. The husband had the halibut with preserved lemon risotto and I have to agree with him, that was a fine, fine dish. Absolutely no complaints and he cleaned his plate. Please, y’all. If you’re a server or cook, finish as strong as you start. I’ve read a ton of reviews on this place, and there are hardly any server issues mentioned. I can only assume this laziness and inattention happens because you’re getting ready to end your shift. We were all still half an hour out. Not fair. We’re paying just as much as someone with a 6:00 pm reservation on a Friday night.
I’ve never been so uncomfortable watching a staff run so hard and then …in the middle of our meal start to yell and scream ACROSS the dining room at her staff. Food . Great. Staff. Great!! Host makes me not want to come in( gal w/ the accent)
Went last night, quaint restaurant with a great pub feel. Service was great, absolutely everything the four of us ordered was exquisite!! One of the best meals I have had in the 30+ years in the valley! I like the ability to view the kitchen, gives you a connection to your food. We had the duck, pork belly, bacon cheeseburger, & goat cheese creme fraiche, BBQ bacon beans were to die for!! The bread pudding desert was spot on & the hazelnut Carmel torte is a must have!
Total disappointment.. Well, I love meat, so I was ready to like this place. However, dinner there was quite the disappointment. Where to begin…The menu and signage are full of errors, which make for a terrible first impression. The service is very very slow. Nice waiter and bartender, but drink came out wrong and it took forever to place an order and then get food. And the place was not full. The food, when it did come out, was just so-so. There’s much better food at other places in town. The green peppercorn sauce is especially bad, though the steak was cooked well. And even though the server offered us a different sauce, he was so slow with it, that it came out after we were done with our meal. We wanted to order dessert, but it took forever for them to come take our order. We said no to dessert. The server was nice enough to offer us a free dessert as an apology for the delay, but that took so long that we were about to leave when he brought it out. It was not very good. We left it half-eaten and swore never to go back again. By the way, the only thing they were prompt with was the bill.
Potential….and problems. Here’s the good news–the steak and fries were done to perfection. The bad news? Pretty much everything else. Here’s a sampling–the peas in the appetizer were way past picking–big and hard (a real no-no) and the mustard dressing was bland. Some of the olives were nice, but others were soft and mealy in the olive sampler. The sauce for the steak (supposedly green peppercorn) had absolutely no flavor at all. The mashed potatoes with the pork belly (which was lacking in that sticky sweetness that you would expect) were actually watery. The menu was full of typos (I counted at least six), the service was mediocre (here’s a bottle of water, pour it yourself), loooong periods of time between servers checking in, and the only thing that came quickly was the bill–big faux pas. When I finally was able to ask if the peppercorn sauce was as it should be it took 20 minutes for some more to come out (the meal was over by then). The waiter did offer a free dessert, but the rhubarb was mushy and didn’t even have any flavor–not sure how you accomplish that with rhubarb, but they managed. Like the title says, there’s potential, but for a restaurant clearly trying for a local, organic, upscale vibe there’s a lot that needs to be fixed before I’ll go back.
