It’s tempting to joke that this would be the least vegan-friendly restaurant in the Rogue Valley, but that isn’t even true. The salads are delicious and locally-sourced, and the vegetables are prepared with the same care as the main courses. Of course, Smithfield’s (named after the famous meat market in east London) is known for its main courses, and what wonderful main courses they are. The lamb is fabulous, and I write as someone who has more than his share of poorly prepared lamb. However, my wife and I primarily eat fish and chicken, so it is hard to avoid ordering one of the many varieties of steak. The difference between a steak at Smithfield’s and a run-of-the-mill steak is like the difference between eating farmed Atlantic Salmon and freshly-caught Chinook. The service is great, finding that difficult balance between being attentive and overly fawning. Finally, the wine list is well-chosen and reasonable; whoever puts it together works to bring in the best from the Northwest, but also realizes that California and Europe deserve their great reputations.
This was our second time here. We were here a year ago. I was happy to see nothing had changed: The service was great, the food was outstanding, and the decor was wonderful. It’s a steak house, but they have much more than just steak, and they do it all perfectly. I had pork belly with bacon-braised collard greens, mash, and grilled peach. Holy moly. Insanely good. My boyfriend had the duck cassoulet – wonderful! We got an appetizer, a bottle of wine, and split a dessert. It ended up being around $150, with tip… so definitely a splurge!
