I regret it took a Groupon to draw our family into this restaurant because Chinatown Restaurant is offering quality dim sum and delicious Chinese dishes at family-friendly prices. Our family of four arrived after 7 p.m. Friday, so several dim sum choices were already off the board; the full assemblage is available for lunch crowds. We ordered a pot of tea and a large bowl of hot & sour soup ($12.95) for starters. Our dim sum order was small, again in consideration of our late arrival. We chose pork shew my (sui mai) ($3.75), har gow ($3.75) and normy gai ($4.75). I recommend all three, especially for customers with teenagers, who will appreciate the savory har gow and the sweet, sticky rice of normy gai, studded with chicken, BBQ pork, and Chinese sausage. We explained to our waitress that this was our first visit and asked her to guide us with recommendations. She inquired whether we had allergies or strong dislikes. We answered no. With her guidance, we ordered salt and pepper squid ($11.95), Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce ($9.95) and sizzling scallops & beef with black bean sauce ($12.95).It is difficult to describe how well our three main dishes balanced. We alternated bites of steamed rice with the salty, fried squid with its tangy (Sichuan peppercorns) seasoning with the comforting, earthy Chinese broccoli. The scallops were small but retained a lovely rich sweetness that mingled nicely with the beef and assorted vegetables in the garlicky black bean sauce.I left a sizable gratuity to recognize the delicious food and kind service as well as cover the Groupon, which isnt necessary to attract dim sum lovers. The restaurant is in a vintage strip mall at a surprising location. If you are traveling northwest on SW Walker Road, take a right immediately after the Plaid Pantry on SW Butner Road; thats easy to do in daylight but a bit tricky if you arrive for a late dinner. We will return for lunch, so we can enjoy the full assortment of dim sum offerings.
This place is worse than cafeteria food in a non existent Cuban prison. If you enjoy trash, be it the employees, food, atmosphere, whatever, go here. If not, don’t eat here no matter what. The dim sum that the payed reviewers (check it out, go across Google reviews and notice the odd similarities in the same photos being used for different people) are so proud of, well, it would be good if they made it fresh or even that day, but it’s soggy of not crunchy, and typically does not contain decent quality meat. The drinks are warm, the staff is rude, the bathrooms will not have soap or towels, I can’t stop. This place is terrible
I use to come here all the time and was deeply saddened by the quality of food I purchased lately. The dim sum was gummy, as if it were old. The rest of the food I ordered had much salty and it was overly greasy. The price goes up. But the most reason I will not come back here because the service is terrible. The waiter did not hand me the ordered food at the counter after my meal but came to my table and looking for the cash then asked where was her tips with the angry voice. I could tip her more if she just gave me my order with smile. A word of advice Chinatown: You should educate your servers to more respect to your customers.
Best dim sum in town!. This is the local spot that all of the Chinese people go to when they want to eat authentic Chinese food. You can tell that they make everything from scratch. I always go here with my family whenever I’m in town from college!
Good Dim Sum on the Westside. I find the dim sum at Chinatown to be better than what I can get in downtown Portland. The variety on the carts isn’t extensive but you can order things if you’ll willing to wait. I enjoy the leaf wrapped sticky rice, beef shew my, spare ribs w/ black bean sauce, stuffed bell peppers, and lobster ball (make sure it’s fresh on hasn’t been sitting on the cart too long). This place can be packed on the weekends so be prepared to wait if you show up at noon.
Horrible place. I never write reviews, its this bad. I ordered Take out. The chowmeing noodles were actually just ramen noodles. The chicken was boiled and somehow covered in grease. I ordered PLAIN chow mein because Im allergic to seafood. They gave my Seafood chow mein and charged me for it. The eggrolls literally squirted out grease when i bit into them. The fried rice was literally plan white rice, with chives mixed in. I asked for extra sweet and sour sauce with my eggrolls…and I kid you not…They gave me containers of KETCHUP, no sweet and sour. No chopsticks either. Oh, and for 2 side orders, egg rolls and 1 sezchuan chicken? $38. The lady at the front counter was rude, and the top of the chowmein was hard as a rock, like it had been under heat lamps for hours. So, so sad and will never ever go back.
Up and down feeling in Chinatown.. Some days this is the best food I get in the neighborhood and others I wonder what’s going on in the kitchen and who pissed off the staff. Great Dim Sum and hit or mis entrees make this a roller coaster ride.
