The Portland Chronicles. Portland has long since crept out of the shadows and it has acquired a reputation as an out front place for food and drink so I felt it was time for a road trip but its reputation left me with more questions than confirmationI thought the best place to start for a chow down would be the much lauded food truck pod, most notably at the corner of S.E 12th and S.E Hawthorne. Its a grimy little enclave made up of semi permanent trailers interspersed with picnic tables and trash receptacles. Offering a variety of grab and gobble bites, I started with El Brasero which offers a familiar list of recognizable Mexican favorites. When trying a ethnic place for the first time, I always go for something that should be at least a great representation of the genre. In this case tacos. After getting by the far less than enthusiastic counter senor, I had one carne asada and one pastor taco accompanied by two small containers of hot sauce, one green and one red. The sauces were both very commendable with lots of flavor and the highlight of the experience. The tacos were both forgettable in flavor, appearance and temperature. No indication at all that Mamacita was back there cookin up Sonoran love. If for some reason I again landed there by coincidence, I might give something else a try but I wouldnt drive five blocks to eat there. As I passed out of the pod I noticed another shack that would give me cause to return, The Swamp Shack.

Gross food, lazy service. Extremely and quizzically slow service, despite there being relatively few customers. Nearly every item on the menu lists sour cream as an ingredient. I ordered an item that did not list sour cream as an ingredient, yet it came with sour cream in it. When I complained to the guy working the truck, he didn’t believe me when I told him what the menu says, nor would he step out of his truck to go look at his menu. Terrible service, bad food.

Fat Burritos. The burritos are as big as a small child’s arm and taste fresh for a food cart. Prices are about $6-$8 after breakfast, where you can get a burrito for $4.50. I just wish you could get a breakfast burrito all day…
