Simple atmosphere, super-friendly staff, good, Russian-style food. I had the farmer’s cheese and scallion dumplings; my sis had cabbage rolls. Both were excellent. Well worth a visit. I’ll be back.
It’s authentic Russian, down to the pop music in the background. If members of the Politburo came to Portland, I’d take them here. The Herring under Fur was to die for. Great Mule from the bartender. Strong enough to make me think twice if I was on the Burnside Bridge on the walk back.
Nice Russian food. Ambiance is really cozy and minimal. I really liked the Moscow Mule vodka based cocktail served. Also the service is good as the person in charge was adequately knowledgeable and explained to us the items which were honestly quite alien to us.
Different, food is well prepared. I liked some of their cold dishes, the dumplings are good, drinks are good too. Somewhat on the expensive side for the food. Overall not a bad experience for me.
It is hard to make upscale Russian food and to please those of its own cultural heritage, which in part explains the review below. Russian food is mostly based around unassuming ingredients, so the expectation is to pay little and get full. In addition, you could never have the same borsch from a different household, each family prepares traditional Russian dishes completely differently -so you can hardly compare. As a first generation immigrant from Russia to Canada, I have not been to many Russian restaurants, but have heard that many leave much to be desired with regards to both menu and atmosphere. From this perspective, I feel that Kachka did it well. Russian food with a touch of foreign culinary expertise, excellent presentation, tasteful and nostalgic interior mixing a dacha-like and a wallpapered-apartment-feel.While I do enjoy my mother’s golubtsi more and would have liked to have double the portion of the delicious pickled garlic scapes, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the coal grilled trout and the accompanying salad. We had a good time and I would recommend it to those curious about what some fancier Russian fare could have been like during 193Os perhaps, like in Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita.
