I headed over to the food pod on Hawthorne, knowing I wanted to give Potato Champion a try. I had followed them on here for a long time, and everything always looked delicious. We ordered the pulled pork BBQ fries and the Poutine Fries. The BBQ fries had way too much juice from the pulled pork. The fries became a soggy mess, and the consistency made them gross. The Poutine fries were much better, the thick gray allowing the fries to still stay a bit crispy, and didn’t turn into mush like the BBQ fries. I would highly recommend the Poutine fries, they were delicious.

Potatoes, poutine, and fries – Oh My! Niche food carts are certainly no stranger to Portland, so it should come as no surprise that such a cart would specialize in America’s favorite food pastime, the glorious potato. Located in a recently renovated pod garden in SE Hawthorne, this charming cart has actually been around for a minute. I’m told that since its conception, it has stuck to a brilliant mission: to set out and feed the late night with one basic ingredient as a cornstone… and indeed, it does that well. Even from the get-go, it’s hard not to chuckle at the character of this place. A black and white logo greets you upon walking up of a poor spud with a burly chopping axe buried in it! How rude! Obviously they mean business when it comes to potato slaying. The menu itself is straight forward and inventive. From fresh cut Belgium fries to comforting Canadian poutine, the servings offered here are the real deal. Essentially there’s a few core dishes with three basket sizes to choose from. For bonus points you can you can mix and match to your liking. Prices start at moderate and climb up from there. There’s also an impressive dipping sauce selection, which adds to the variety and promises to keep things spiced up. Although expectedly (and insanely) greasy, there is something deeply satisfying about stuffing your face with a mountain of salty, artery clogging fries. Heck, for good measure you can add pulled pork and gravy to top everything off! Make no mistake, your cholesterol levels will scream bloody murder… But your inner fat kid will likely praise hell yes. Four stars.
