Pizza Value that May Not Reach the Olympian Fields.. Having heard that the Pyro Pizza Cart was doing value wood fired pizza that was a rival to the big boys on the wood fire block, a downtown venture brought us to the 12th and Hawthorne area to check it out. The first thing that strikes you is the friendly nature and helpfulness of the order takers. The young man was helpful in suggesting an order of a Marinara Pizza and a Fennel Sausage Pizza. At $8.00 each pie, we were struck by the sound financial investment. What better way to sample the wares than tasting straight forward, simple pies that would depend on crust, sauce, and cooking method. The ordering process was painless and produced our order within 10 minutes. More painful was the fact that there was no beer available at 1:00 p.m. on a Saturday. You can usually go next door to the circle of carts to a couple of bars that welcome patrons with cart food, but alas they were not open until later in the afternoon. We sat at the picnic tables with our piping hot pizzas and bottled water to get down to business. What we found was a competent and value laiden pizza that was better than average, but not quite in the same league as Apizza Scholls, Ken’s Artisan, or Nostrana. Points would have to be deducted for a bland tasting crust and a pizza sauce that tasted not too far from the product being removed from a No. 10 can. But as a pizza enthusiast needing a late lunch, the pizzas were hot, charred, and contained pretty tasty Fennel sausage. Two pies were more than two rational persons could, or should eat when dinner is to be had in a few hours, so our request for a pizza box was gladly honored. The difference here was that I gratiously allowed by companion to take the leftover pizza…… At Apizza Scholls, you would have to pry any leftover pizza out of my cold, dead hand! All in all, this place is worth a shot if you are in the area and in need of a charred pizza.
For the money, best pizza in town. Hands down, the best pie you can get for under $10. Sure, there’s places like Apizza Scholls and they’re good as well, but for $8, nothing else in town comes close. What sets them apart is the quality of ingredients. Can’t get over that milky, fresh mozzarella and that really top-notch pepperoni. Definitely no Hormel packets laying around in the back, these guys take ingredients seriously. How very Italian of them.

OMG SO DELICIOUS. The pizza here is great. Simple and savory. Actually they have quite a few pizzas to choose from. Just the right size to feed my hungry belly.
Pizza Paradisimo. Blue Cheese Crumbles, slices of Apple, Pepper Bacon, Gruyere and White Sauce?! On a Pizza!? SOLD. This was a fantastic tasting Pie, and $9 for something big enough to feed 2 people; a hell of a deal. Not a huge fan of the thin crust but it certainly worked here… drexlermcstyles.tumblr.com
