The nuts and bolts. I want to start by saying that I was pleasantly surprised. First off, I was expecting after reading someones post about this place that they were associated with the Matador. Come to find out it was a different Matador than I was thinking of. In fact its associated with the Matador on 19th and West Burnside (downtown), not the Matador on East Burnside there on 20 something . YES, there is more than one Matador, in fact there are three, two of which are a chain from Seattle, ie, the one on NW 23rd in relation to East Burnside. Long story short, again, i was pleasantly surprised. Let me support my thoughts by the stiff drinks we were served. It was basically getting two drinks in one. A huge plus!!! I can see us returning sooner than later. This is a great local neighborhood spot, perfect for the SE / Belmont area. One of those hidden treasures. Great prices on food, not a huge selection, but I would strongly recommend the plantains with the house hot sauce.
Spanish Bombs. Dropped in for some Happy Hour cocktails. Bartender was friendly and was heavy on the pours. Taking the place in it seemed that this is a dive bar that will need a few years to become dingy and dirty enough to become one. But the blueprint has been laid and they seem to be on their way. A plate of Nachos came past us and it was the size of a basketball. If we hadnt just eaten down the road we wouldve ordered one on the spot. Next time. Our only complaint was when my wife ordered the $7 Drink Special, which was Hendricks Gin and some other stuff, she watched the gal bartending pour a 3 count of gin (into a pint glass) which is weak. As a bartender, my wife notices things like that. She thought it was kind of strange, especially since our well drinks were pretty stiff. So she ended up with a glass of cilantro. We joked that we should ask for some Tortilla Chips to dip into her glass of Pico de Gallo. Anyhow, sh!t happens. Great Portland atmosphere & fun. The elotes are to die for but the enchiladas tasted like a salt lick.
Great decor, cool music, good atmosphere. The food is good, though not a standout, and the latin inspired menu is geared more toward vegetarian snacking and a little short on variety. The cocktail menu was a little disappointing although ordering a highball or a shot from the bar gets you a heavy pour. A good place to chill.
Good vibe. Great drinks. Rad jukebox.
