A good place to try Tonkatsu. Tonkatsu is Japan’s answer to Germany’s Schnitzel or the Deep South’s Chicken-Fried Steak, and the new restaurant Tokyo Tonkatsu did a fine job with it. Several kinds of meat can be used to make katsu, but Tonkatsu is specifically pork. I had one of the Bento boxes for lunch–salad, rice, potstickers, 3 slices of California Roll (actually, they allowed me to substitute two more potstickers as I’m not a fan of sushi) and the Tonkatsu, sliced over shredded cabbage with Katsu sauce on top. The lunch began with Miso soup, which I usually don’t care for, but this restaurant’s Miso is tasty. Perhaps other places overdo it with the fish flakes in the Miso. If, like me, you wimp out and use a fork instead of chopsticks, you might want to ask for a steak knife for the Tonkatsu. The potstickers (Gyoza) were nicely crisp, and the mixed greens/field greens salad with its house dressing was a good complement.
