Ice Cream on I-5. Yummy local Umpqua ice cream up to 6 scoops on a cone or 15 in a bowl. I love their banana splits, with all the variety of ice cream and toppings I can get something different every visit. Tasty fried cuisine, I haven’t tried the fried pickles but the fried mushrooms are heaven. Can’t drive past Rice Hill!
This place is FANTASTIC!!!. I loved everything about this place!! The huge, old fashioned picnic tables out front, the way everyone in line had a story about their own family tradition of going there, the portion sizes, EVERYTHING!!!! The girls behind the counter were so helpful and nice! I cannot say enough good things about the K & R Drive Inn! We are going to come back as much as possible! I also loved that it was pet friendly! They even have a special treat just for dogs with a dog bone on top!! How great is that!!!
LOVE IT SOOO MUCH!!!. This place has the best shakes from anywhere I have ever been!! There were so many choices it was hard for me to pick! I had to let people go in front of me because I was torn on what flavors to get! I finally decided on hot fudge with coconut creme ice cream and was NOT disappointed!! It was so thick and delicious!! It was hand scooped and mixed in front of me while I watched(so cool!) And I was so glad it was not out of one of those machines from fast food places that never get properly cleaned! This is my new favorite place to go! Next time I will have a burger also because everyone in front of me was saying how great they were!! I LOVE K & R!!!
Unfriendly, expensive, dirty, no bathroom. The ONLY reason they stay in business is there are no other quick places to eat within 20 miles. And if you order two scoops of ice cream, you can only get 1 flavor. If you want two flavors you have to buy 4 scoops. A total rip off! And the are not friendly, it’s their way or no way. I will NOT go again
The reason franchises triumphed. Stop by this relic of old time America drive-in age, and you’ll be confronted with all the reasons why fast food franchises took over our national highway landscape:– K&R is overpriced, $4 for a piss poor excuse for a burger that pales in comparison to the $1.29 Big Burger at Carl’s Jr. For $4, I expect hand-formed, not pre-pressed frozen patties from Winco.– K&R is unaccommodating, with posted leaflets on every flat surface telling why they won’t pander to the wants of their customers.– K&R is slow, taking ages to get orders out in spite of all the bellyaching about how much they spend on labor.– K&R offers no amenities, with the overwhelming feeling that customers are a nuisance, not their reason for being. For decent, consistent food opt for the fast food choice: Carl’s Jr. just north in Cottage Grove, or A&W down in Sutherlin.
Avoid!. I had always wanted to stop here. I often drive between Portland and Ashland and like to make a stop along the way. I assumed this would be a friendly family-run place with great service. WRONG! I will never go there again. I don’t know if there’s enough space to list all of the reasons for not returning. The first thing that struck me is how many negative signs they have posted. It’s not exactly Welcome Friends around here. NO this and NO that and extra charges for anything. While we were there, a woman asked for a cup because her 3-scoop ice cream cone was melting rapidly in the heat. They told her it would be 25 Cents. You want a cup of ice water to go with your burger – that’s 25 Cents. We had an order for two and they provided us with ONE napkin and there were no more outside. I’m guessing that if we had asked for another one, it would have been 25 Cents. And not only do they not have a restroom, they have all sorts of signs telling you not to go and ask other Rice Hill merchants to use theirs either. It’s a roadside business. Why don’t they just add one?Although I didn’t mind so much that their prices were a little high, I did mind that the quality of the food was poor, especially since it took so long. In particular, the Jalapeno poppers, were basically breaded fried cream cheese with virtually no peppers and no spice whatsoever. Don’t need to go here ever again.
What a GREAT PLACE!. I worked at the K&R when I was in High School back in the 90’s. Not only was the food great, but the crew and management were top rate. I wish that all my bosses were like Ben and Ruth, Syd, Susan and Becky. So many more that deserve credit for making the K&R great! Keep up the good work guys. I plan on coming back to say hi when I get back from another overseas tour. Take care. Erick Neely
