Great dining experience. The food was delicious as always and the service was excellent.
Chef/Owner with an Attitude. Weve eaten at Gildas several times and were always happy with the food and service. Not so on Friday March 15th. We had a reservation for 5:30, made through Open Table, and requested to be checked out by 7 PM to make it to the theater. We were the second table seated and ordered two salads and two main dishes. As we waited for our salads we noticed that patrons who had arrived after us got appetizers and salads. The couple next to us, who arrived about 10 -15 minutes after us, got their salad almost immediately after ordering. We asked our waitress what was going on and she replied that she had put our salad order in at the earliest opportunity and would check. A few minutes later she brought our salads.Next we had to wait for our main courses. Our neighbor table and two others who arrived after us got served before us. (Our main courses were simple: pasta with sauces.) Again we asked the waitress what was going on. It took several more minutes before we finally got our dinner, again only after inquiring where our food was. When we were finished, there was no time left for dessert. We asked for the General Manager and she apologized and even took the salads off our bill. The manager said she would talk to the owner later, when he was not cooking. On the way out the owner/chef asked me in a very unfriendly manner what the problem was. I explained our frustration over the extremely slow service. His response was almost hostile, lecturing me that it took 20 minutes to get our salads and another 20 minutes to get our main dishes and that was acceptable . I reminded him about our time restriction, the fact that other tables got served before us, to which he responded that we should eat at McDonalds. We left feeling insulted and vowed never to return. Had he shown any concern, or apologized, we would have forgiven a bad experience. No restaurant does everything perfectly. Evidently, this chef would rather lose a customer than acknowledge a less-than-perfect experience.
The food & service was all we hope for. Elio was our server, he put the personal touch on a great Italian diner. Of course Eliot is from Italy.
Great food. Had bolognese. Ask for Kasia.
Love Gilda’s!. Two extraordinary dishes we’ve had are the lemon caper halibut and the scallops. Both prepared to perfection with accompanying sides delicious. Great salads. Good ambiance and friendly staff. The typical Italian dishes are not like my family made (but all Italians say that), meatballs are too hard and spicy hot. But do try Gilda’s. One of the definitely better restaurants in Portland!
Seafood is best. Second time there-and again the seafood with pasta was fresh and very good. Other items we had were a B at best-Caesar salad was way too heavy on the dressing, dessert seemed old. Service was friendly but slow. The seafood pastas will bring us back to try again-so hope this was an off night.
