the view is great of course, and because it’s often not that busy you can get a seat by the window or on the balcony. i went in for lunch and the place was pretty vacant. the service was great and super fast. in fact, it was too fast. the crab cakes came out so fast i wondered how fresh they were and whether they were made on site. either way, they were just okay. the salad was better. overall, just an okay experience.

Had dinner with a colleague on a business trip not long ago and we were completely forgotten about. I had to hunt another worker down to get my receipt because our waitress literally dissapeared and never came back. The menu is very, very limited. But they do have the best humus around. The room service service is much better than in the restaurant…haha.
Blah. Food eaten: clams, crab cakes, beet salad, house salad. I’ll start with the crab cakes, they were cooked in old oil couldn’t taste nothing as the oil overwhelmed the minced crab. (Costco sells far better crab cakes), I love beets but this salad is awful it seemed like they were from a can. House was just that a handful of mixed leafs from Costco with a drizzile of vinaigrette.Yes the view is lovely but anyone who eats out at quality establishments really should try somewhere else. Simply put this restaurant is not what it is trying to be it will however out a hole in your wallet.
Mothra Say….. Great Views, Warm Breezes. Just a quick note that this bar and grill remains a fantastic place to have a quality drink at a great price with HH hors d oeuvres. K and I dropped in after a visit to Vancouver last week and ordered up a plate of truffle fries with parmessian aoli, a huge plate of deep fried calamari with (surprise) deep fried onions underneath. Wow! Fan-tas-tic. Plenty of dips and two glasses of house chard went very well. So well in fact, that we did not have dinner that night. Just snacked. $18.00 plus tip, and Mothra says, enjoy the warm breezes off the river and what a secret this is. Recently, after viewing some homes in NW Portland with Dennis our realtor (he’s terrific btw), K & I met Dennis at the Jantzen Beach Bar & Grill outside on the balcony over-looking the Columbia River at the Red Lion Hotel. K and I have been coming here since 06′ and seems to be the best kept secret (until now) to gnaush and sip a cold one with a great view of the river and inbound aircraft. We come out here rain or shinealthough shine is preferable. They have a number of brews both on tap and in bottle, mixed drinks, and a fairly wide menu of both lunch, dinner, and my favorite: Happy Hour. K had a sav blanc, and Dennis and I each had a pint brew on tap. We shared raw oysters (larger than I particularly like, but at 3 fer $5, not bad), cold prawns in a red horseradish sauce, chips & salsa, and a variety of off the menu and pub food. We have had lunch here before and it has never disappointed. In fact, a few years back, dinner across the hall was really nice (just too long ago to review). Linda our server made the long walk out from the inside restaurant and made sure we were doing OK.There are plenty of tables outside along the narrow balcony hence you can stretch out and enjoy yourself. When seated outside expect service to slow a bit. But I am not complaining. It is a peaceful place to ‘gather in the view’ and breathe in that cool Portland air we love so much; with the occasional ‘jet-A fuel’ that wafts by following a B-737. Wonderful food and service. I hadn’t been in since they changed from Shenanigans. It was a marvelous change. The ambience was better. The food was amazing and the service was spectacular. They completely remodeled and the restaurant bar is very warm and inviting. We sat outside and had Manila clams and salads, then tried the Mushroom Risotto and Wild Salmon while overlooking the Columbia River. We will certainly be back and will tell our friends….and we’re excited to see some of the great local live bands friday nights.
Pay for the View. We arrived at Jantzen Beach Bar & Grill at sunset, and were seated outside to a remarkable view. The sevice was okay, a little shaky (forks were dropped over the balcony on accident and the specials weren’t well known), and the food was just okay. I was disappointed that my Moscow Mule didn’t come in a copper cup, as I’ve been looking forward to trying; and my dinner partner’s ribeye was swimming in some marroon butter muck needlessly. All in all, the experience was good, but then the bill came and we couldn’t believe that relatively normal meal cost us what it did. Be aware that you’re largely eating the view here.
