This is a dive bar………… In the finest sense. 8 pool tables. A couple of mature neighborhood ladies seated at the bar enjoying their second late morning pick-me-up. Duct tape repairing separations in the indoor-outdoor carpeting. Friendly folks. My kind of place! SWMBO wasn’t so sure. An acquaintance from a locale eatery site suggested that DJ’s B&G had a secret Vietnamese menu. We decided to share a couple of selections. Our server, Candy, explained that my water would cost the same dollar as my Bride’s 7-up. HMMM. I remembered the drought days in the ’70s in the Sacramento valley when some restaurants experimented with this practice, but never before in Oregon had I encountered this. We ordered Bun Xao Ga (Stir fried Vermicelli with Chicken and Vegetables) and Goi Cuon (Rice Paper wrapped Chicken, Pork, Vermicelli and Vegetables with Peanut dipping Sauce). I don’t know if there are regional differences in Vietnamese dishes, but these were unlike any I have had before. They were good, but the Chicken Meat had a quality reminiscent of the Turkey breast meat you found in the back of the fridge a week after Thanksgiving. You made the sandwich anyway, and it was OK, but tasted a little old. I know my fellow midnight refrigerator raiders will understand exactly what I’m talking about. Despite that small criticism, I liked the place. Since it’s right next door to my favorite Meat guy, Caesar, at Carniceria El Jalapeno, I’ll probably be back.
