Had the chance to eat at Po’ Shines about a week ago with a couple coworkers and had a pretty positive experience. We ordered and shared 3 appetizers (Rib Tips, Catfish Bites & Hush Puppies). They were all delicious. I ordered the platter with fried chicken, ribs, sweet potatoes, Mac n cheese and hush puppies. In my opinion, the chicken was some of the best I’ve ever had, the other parts of the meal we’re good as well. The mac n cheese fell a little flat. I think it could have used either some heat (jalapeos) or a variation of texture, like a crust topping or something. All in all it was a good meal and I look forward to eating there again.
Ginger chicken stir fry was so good I came the next night and tried the red curry chicken. Also great. Loved the price $7.50!
Sadly the WORST. We wanted to like this place but it was awful. Terrible service from a curt woman who wouldn’t return our smiles. After pouring bad coffee, she disappeared until we called hello at the counter 45mins later, after being served bad sausage (had turned rancid!) and completely burnt French Toast. Charred black and turned over to be hidden! Really? No wonder she vanished, leaving us alone in this sad diner with inedible food and bad coffee. Sure they compd us but what a depressing place.
Great idea, terrible food. I really wanted to like this place— inexpensive, and for a good cause. But, the food was really bad. We started with the okra; It was over cooked and flavorless. Fiollowed by equally flavorless and dry chicken and waffles. The waffles were decent, but served with fake maple syrup, which made them inedible. . The service was poor, the waitress was slow and kinda surly.
Worth the drive!. Looking for something different? My wife and I were in the neighborhood and just dropped in not knowing what to expect. As good as anything I’ve had in Kansas City! We will be back.
I love this place!! Great food, great atmosphere, and the make wait staff are so courteous it makes me feel like I’m in a 5 star hotel. I love the mix of ethnicities, I love it all! Btw, I’d never found soul food I liked before this, even in my trips to the south. My favorites are the meatloaf, hush puppies, n sweet tea. Yum.
I love this place so hard! The service is always excellent, the decor is quirky and colorful (you will believe you could be in New Orleans), the atmosphere is unpretentious, friendly community vibe, and the food never disappoints. My breakfast favorite is blackened catfish, eggs, and side of greens = love!
