Simply wonderful food.. I love this place, the lunch special at $17 including wine… score! The food is very simple, which is amazingly hard to do well and they absolutely nail it. Perfect pasta with beautiful sauces, the appetizers are varied and every one of the 8 I have tried has been great. Portion sizes to tend toward the European size but with the addition of an order of focaccia (the best I have had outside of Italy) the lunch special was more than enough for this (lets just say larger than average) male.
Update: Pasta is amazingly …. Update:Pasta is amazingly good!Dessert is too! The Luce cake is delicious. It would be even better paired w/ a cup of coffee–the ‘sponge’ cake w/custard filling layered in-between almost requires it, especially considering the texture of the sponge cake. The seafood stew is also killer. A little bit of everything in it: spicy, tomato based broth w/ onions, clams, mussels, octopus, shrimp, squid, scallops, what else am I missing?! A definite yum!The service has also always been great. Had to throw that in there.14 Apr, 2013Had one of the lunch specials: foccaccia bread (salt topping), salad (w/ herbs), and hanger steak. It was GOOD! And, for $12, GREAT! Also ordered two antipasti, fresh mozzarella cheese slice w/ anchovy topping, and roasted beets w/ onion. Very small serving, 2.00 per antipasti. But, I suppose that’s the way it should be, no? I shared the antipasti w/ my lunch mate, and it turned out to work just fine. Too full for dessert tho:/ I will be going back for sure, def need to try out the pasta!!! Yum. Luce is just YUM all around.
Wow what a great place! Mussels were fantastic and hanger steak was fantastic! The salad both romaine and mixed green herb salad were also very good! The wine was excellent! I will be back and I can see why this got on the Top 10 new restaurants in America!
We were served a heaping tablespoon of sour cardoons and a single kalamata olive dripping in tasteless olive oil on the same plate with 2 tiny finger sized crostini with the fig/goat cheese mousse. Goat cheese with a fresh fig would look so much more appetizing. The avocado-walnut linguine was tasteless and the caprese salad was completely drenched in light yellow oil oil. A nice quality EVOO is usually green. No gluten free pasta options if you need them.We ordered cabbage and green beans since the main dishes don’t have vegetable sides. The cabbage was very tough and half of the green beans were very stringy, a poor produce choice. We left disappointed and hungry. I’ve eaten in Italy and I dont understand the rave comparisons and have to wonder what the Bon Appetit reviewer ate. Should have made his dinner choices.
Retired chef, dinner with familyPleasant surprise..tried all the antipasta, small and very italian. Pasta is house made with light preparations. The pasta w shrimp and saffron was delightful. Pork and beef Ragu incredible but still lightDesserts interesting…a watermelon pudding, delightful! Couldn’t figure it but couldn’t stop eating it. House made cheese with honey and local strawberries, sublime.Go for it and enjoy.
I loved my recent dinner at Luce. It’s a simple, straightforward menu of authentic Italian food, and a great atmosphere to enjoy it in. To my taste, they really caught the feel of a true trattoria. And the service couldn’t have been more wonderful.
Nothing amazing, just the trendy feel of Portland, but much better food around town to take that in at. Forgot my entree, brief apology no other offerings besides that.
