The garlic / lime chicken is the bomb!!!! I try to stop by every time I’m in Portland , I just wish they were open more often.
This is my second visit to Horn of Africa, and it’s rapidly becoming my favorite Ethiopian restaurant. The food is fantastic, really fresh and authentic. We adopted a child from Ethiopia and have visited the country on multiple occasions, this food is as close to what we experienced in the country as any we’be found in Portland. The atmosphere is warm and ther service was great- –the owner is friendly and welcoming? Our server, Ruby, was sweet and engaging. My only critisism is the wine selection– not great, but who goes to an Ethiopian restaurant for the wine?
Sampled their fare………… At The World Beat Festival 2011 in Salem. I had the Garlic Lemon Chicken Wrap and it was very good. It had large chunks of lightly grilled Onion and a Curry-like Sauce in a large Flour Tortilla. Yum! I would have come back to try their Fresh Seasoned Spring Lamb, but the Wrap filled me right up. I can’t wait to try some of their interesting menu items at their permanent location in Portland!
One of The best vegetarian food in Portland. As a vegetarian, it could be very challenging to find a place to eat. But horn of Africa solved our problem. We especially love their lunch buffet, where half of the main entry are vegetarian. They use a lot turmeric, fresh Ginger and garlic which is great for the heart, immune system as well as circulation and digestive system. Their corn dish is exotic with huge and firm corns that I have ever tried in my life. The potato dish is golden due to the color of the magic spice-turmeric nicely enhanced by the dark greens that cooked just right. The mushroom is spicy in a lovely way. The lentile dish is smooth, and full of flavor. Their sponge like bread is interesting and fullfilling. Their little donuts is just heavenly, not too sweet like the regular donuts, but sweet enough to make you smile. The flour they use for the spongy bread is multigrain, as we were told. But we never figure out what the donuts were made of since the color is like warm camp fire. Oh, their rice is special too, a slim long grain rice mixed with finely chopped vegetables and a mild but pleasant flavor, which can stand out by itself as well as addition with other dishes. We have taken many friends to the place and were told by them that we have a great taste. The meat loving friends like their goat dish which is quite special. Overall their food is healthy, hearty, delicious and exotic. We will recommend them to all of our friends, vegetarian or not. They also have a cute waterfall in the court yard. We highly recommend to take a slow walk over there so you can digest better.
First time trying African food. Very friendly people and delicious food. Recommended!
I was really surprised to see the low number of people who liked this place. We had the Sunday dinner buffet and it was delicious. I would especially recommend the potato dish(not on the daily menu, which is a shame)and the chicken curry. The citysearch review about a few pictures and purple Formica is obviously from their old location because the new location has some lovely batiks and wooden tables and booths. We will definately be going back and are glad that we stopped despite the naysayers.
Slow and unprofressional service (x2). Perhaps it takes most of it’s business as a take out choice…no matter. I’ll never be back.
