A Winner!. This is one of the most unlikely successes you can imagine. A cajun crawfish joint hidden (literally) inside a Vietnamese themed strip mall. Finding this place actually takes effort. The effort is fully worth it though. Went during happy hour and so got a chance to sample most of the menu. Everything was excellent. In particular the Crawfish Etoufee and Gumbo were truly exceptional. Even the alligator meat is worth a try although I would have like to taste it without having been deep fried first. If this establishment were moved to a more accessible location, I’m sure it would be a runaway success.
Delish and Hip. I’ll admit it’s a sketchy area. Pretty sure we saw a working girl a block away, next to the skeezy porn shop. But when you step into My Brother’s Crawfish, you step into a hipper part of Portland. The room has a cool feel, a great soundtrack playing, and service was great. Enjoyed amazing Fried Green Tomatoes, delectable oyster shooters, and a hearty crawfish and clam boil. Our bill was a mere $40 which is half the price of other seafood boil restaurants. Both of us walked out happy as clams. A great surprise and new favorite. We’ll be back, oh yes, we WILL be back! 🙂
The Etoufee, crawdad boil, clam boil, crab cake, blackened catfish, cornbread, and flavored lemonades are all incredible. The wait staff has always been very kind and attentive. The first time we went I put myself in the hands of our waitress as to what I ordered. I would highly recommend this as everything that she suggested was a piece of art. I’ve had nothing here that was ho-hum, it’s all been totally off the charts. The decor has some high points, but overall could use a makeover, the staff has been great though, and I have to say again about the food,,, yummm.
Blah…just BLAH. Worst touffe I have ever tasted. It had a flavor that was reminiscent of dirt. Extremely bland and boring hush puppies that were much too dry and just plain blah. The only redeeming factor was the fried gator and the crab puff. But the crap puff was seriously tiny and grossly over priced based on size. Plus you can get gator at Montage that is WAY more impressive. This place is way over priced for mediocre creole food. I would recommend Montage over this place any day, and it costs the same!!! Also as a minor side note the sweet tea was very boring and not sweet enough, almost as though they had not brewed the tea long enough…as someone that comes from the south I know my creole food, and this food is a preposterous imitation of it. Almost as bad as that frozen or boxed Zattaran’s crap. I might be willing to test it out again (with a different entree for sure) but if I were to base it off today’s meal and service, I would NOT recommend.
Mixed Bag. If you first see the place from outside, it appears it might be closed or even out of business, it is that no frills. Now mind you, I don’t have to have five star looks all the time but they take it to a new low for me. Inside as well, dark, dingy and bordering on dirty in my opinion. However, once you grab some of the eats the outlook gets sunnier and evens out the experience a bit. Shame they cannot at least get it to a 3 star out and inside look. They do have a full bar and some decent brews to go with the food. Service is friendly enough as well. Some HH specials and daily specials are worth a look too.We ordered a bowl of clams in garlic butter, a cup of gumbo, and Shrimp and Soft Shell Po-Boys. Clams were great and Avie ate half of them too. Gumbo was well above average and did have some great seafood chunks in it. Roux was pretty dark, key to a good gumbo, and the broth had a small kick in the pants spicewise. Both Po-Boys looked similar coming out and had a remoulade type sauce on the top of the seafood. They were stuffed with lettuce and tomato as well. My softshell was tasty and the bread, anogther key to great sandwich of this nature was divine. The shrimp Po-Boy was too messy for the little guy so he ate the shrimp off of it for the most part.I had a nice draft rye beer, a local creation and the little one got a Strawberry/Mango lemonade. Other tables had crawfish and seemed to enjoy them. The ambience and atmosphere get a 2, the food a 4 so for now it evens out to 3. LIke. Would go back but might consider it to go this time around. Clean it up folks and have lines down the sidewalks.
Decent and then some. Fried green tomato’s were great as were the hush puppies and mud bugs. The downside was that half of the order was forgotten and never brought out. Bugs were of decent size although some were definitely dead prior to the boil (mushy).
Crawfish Etouffe & Seafood Gumbo. I love cajun food! I read a lot of awesome reviews on this place and I am very disappointed. I drove all the way from StJohns (about a 20-25 minute drive) to get some of their food since I had read almost 30 great views. I ordered the crawfish etouffe side dish and the seafood gumbo side dish just to try it. I asked for spicy neither one was spicy, they both had really weird tastes to them. Not cajun at all. I’ve never had a seafood gumbo taste like that. The etouffe was the better of the two but I just chucked both in the trash. I am by no means rich (I’m a college student) so wasting food is not a habit of mine. They were both just so terrible. I tried adding my own seasonings to the gumbo to try and give it the boost I thought it needed (it was extremely bland). It tasted better but not good enough to finish. AND they gave me one lousy shrimp in a SEAFOOD gumbo. Wow. I will definitely not be coming back to this restaurant. If you want REAL cajun food try Casian Grill in Renton, Washington. I would drive to hell and back for their cajun food. lol But I can’t afford the gas.
