Five Spice Restaurant, SE Portland. I tried Five Spice shortly after it opened and have been a weekly visitor since then. I crave Sichuan dishes and have rquested a number of my favorites from Carmen, the owner. While not originally on the menu they now have general tso’s chicken and theirs is by far the best I have had in Portland. The spicy eggplant is also noteworthy and I have requested Gan Bian Niu Rou Si( Dry Fried Shredded Beef) for my next visit. This was my favorite dish at the original Uncle Chen’s in the early 80’s and I am hoping Five Spice can replicate it. The prices at Five Spice are incredibly reasonable, and the kitchen is new and immaculately clean. As the Portland Mercury indicated this is predominantly Chinese food for Chinese people but their talented chef can cook about any dish you request. This restaurant is a hidden gem.
