Last stop of the night. Walked in at 9:15 (45 min to closing) and the place was still packed, though they found a spot for us at the end of a communal table. We ordered a number of tapas (and wanted to order paella, but were too full):Pepito de Ternera: Outstanding veal sandwich. Wanted to order another right away. Cojonudo: Fried quail egg with chorizo on toast. Delicious. Pa amb tomaquet: Sort of a shredded tomato bruschetta. Delicious. The olive oil was extra virgin tasty. One other one with crab: It was fine. Our least favorite of the bunch. Crab was overwhelmed by other flavors. Finished with a Mini Xuxio, sort of a Bismarck-y pastry fritter, covered in cinnamon and sugar and filled with ridiculous Catalan custard. So good. This place was outstanding.

Went to this little Spanish restaurant for the second time and fell in love all over again. We tried a couple tapas which were flavorful and creative as well as the house sangria which was the best sangria I’ve had. To top of off the Paella Ataula was absolutely stunning. Such a great spot for any occasion. Highly recommend this!!!

Ataula is arguably the best restaurant in town for tapas. In addition to Ataula and Chef Jose Chesa’s acclaim of Portland Monthly’s Chef of the Year 2014, Portland Monthly’s Best New Restaurant 2014, and a national nod as one of GQ’s 25 Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2015, Ataula remains a charismatic and down-to-earth neighborhood favorite. If I could only have one drink for the rest of my Portlandia days, I would pick the seasonal La Familia Sangria from master of the bar, Angel Teta. It’s sangria in its best form, articulated with a carefully crafted bold flavors as a result of sous viding the brandy with a myriad of seasonal fruits and spices. Between the warm, Barcelona-style hospitality, the sangria, and the inventive yet authentic (and delicious) modern Catalan tapas, it’s clear why Ataula is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. paperairplaneblog.com

Not to my taste. We’ve only been to BCN a couple of times but we have friends there who took us to some places they liked and while I can’t comment on authenticity, I can say I was expecting to like the food here more than I did. It was just okay, but a little expensive for that reaction. It’s probably a mistake to try to recreate happy travel experiences but i found the flavors a bit boring, the portions small, the prices high, and many of the dishes difficult to share, either because I was with people I didn’t know well enough to double-dip or because our little plates were so full of sauces from the last dish (or the dish before that or the dish before that, and on and on) that it became a bit messier than I like to eat. So, while I applaud that there’s variety and options in Portland, this is not my favorite spot.

Disappointed. I never do this but had to write to say we had a terrible experience at your restaurant today. Waited over 40 minutes, which is understandable but not acceptable considering NO ONE else had to wait for a table. We stood outside in the rain for 40 minutes, no one came out to update us or wipe off the outdoor tables so we could sit and have a drink. We eventually left and spent several hundred dollars else where. Food is good but will not return and will not recommend.

A treat!. We stopped by Ataula early (around 5:30 PM) and took a couple of seats at the bar, where we were served by Angel. She welcomed us with a friendly smile, took our tapas order and recommended a couple of cocktails to complement our food. I got a deconstructed gin and tonic that features cinchona bark (the raw ingredient in quinine/tonic) that was delicious: more mellow and subtle than a typical G&T. My wife got the house sangria, which was equally good, with a surprising cinnamon kick. Our tapas were, in a word, perfect. We ordered the house made burrata, served with a topping of tapenade and confit tomatoes: if the texture wasn’t as creamy as some we’ve had, the contrasting favors – milky, salty, sweet – more than made up for it. The Nuestras Bravas potatoes are beautiful and just insanely delicious: perfectly crunchy outside, impossibly smooth (thanks, sous vide) on the inside, dressed with an excellent brava sauce and a drizzle of milk alioli. Crazy good. We also had the bombas, which featured nicely spiced beef and that delicious brava sauce, and the deceptively simple Pa amb tomaquet: chewy flatbread rubbed with tomato and olive oil.Everything we ate was beautifully prepared, served with pleasant competence, and freaking delicious. Seriously, I’m not sure what more you can ask for.

I’ve been to Spain multiple times. I’ve eaten at Toro Bravo and Patanegra multiple times. They are/were good. But if you want either a memory of Spain (in certain respects not better but different and excellent. This is the US after all – different products) or a premonition of a trip to Spain…go here. Excellent.
