A Portland fixture. Papa Haydn is known for their exemplary desserts and for good reason. Best carrot cake I’ve ever had. Their French onion soup is wonderful as well. Never had a bad meal here.

Always love Papa Haydn, this long-standing dessert place serves up many varieties of delicious desserts. The last trip we were there in the summer, we had baked Alaska, peach cobbler and chocolate cube. The chocolate cube was delectable — a thin chocolate shell box housed with chocolate mousse with a side of vanilla ice cream. The chocolate box was made with single origin Cordillera Cocuy chocolate which was dark, bitter and brittle; contrasted with the eggy, light, creamy, sweet, vanilla ice cream and buffered by this rich chocolate mousse, a true chocolate lover’s dessert. The baked Alaska had banana ice cream with layers of dolce de leche, vanilla sponge cake, chocolate ganache and bruleed meringue as how it should look in this classic old style dessert. The banana ice cream was delicious and the meringue was nicely chewy.Although it was not as good as the special order baked Alaska at El Gaucho steak house, this was a great attempt. Finally the seasonal dessert at the time, peach blackberry cobbler was delicious, piping hot, buttery goodness with a hint of tang from the berries and a hint of rose flavor.Papa Haydn is a great dessert place that I wish we had in Seattle! doofniks.com

Papa Hayden has always been a classy and delightful spot to visit! Historically known for their delicious desserts, but their food is tasty too!

Which location should I choose???. I have been dining at both restaurants for years. NW, love it the most. In the summer there is nothing better than Sellwood outdoor dining ( the garden and fountain are wonderful). I rarely have a complaint when at the NW location. Consistent is key. Sellwood I have had issues on take out. When this happened I learned they are owned separately. Never would have known. Favorites: Cobb salad, Oregon bay shrimp salad ( this is the one I had an issue with in Sellwood) you don’t pay $13.00 for a side salad size and a 1/8 cup of shrimp…, Club sandwich OMG, soup is usually delish, specials are always a hit. Dessert, WHERE DO YOU START? My fav is one of two, Boccone Dolce, Banana Coconut Cream Pie. The dessert list is amazing. I’ve tried just about all of them. Usually take something home for the kids. See the attached list and drool. This restaurant in both locations is a staple in my book. What I miss are the days of their Salmon Mouse and Corn Beef Hash. I use to drive from Seattle just for the Salmon Mouse. Sunday brunch was never ever a decision, Hash. I wish they would bring both back. Both locations offer a unique setting. Sellwood has an awesome outdoor summer seating. They grow organic vegi’s and the garden is fun to view or walk thru. Plus the architectural pieces are perfect for a antique lover to view. NW is hopping. Line to wait in, interesting people watching.
