The perfect breakfast. Traditional breakfasts like ham and eggs, pancakes, machaca burritos, or eggs Benedict used to be a regular part of my life but somehow through the aging process my interest in that type of early morning bulk intake seemed to disappear. I still enjoy, maybe more so, a starter in the morning but it has been trimmed to two items, a great cup of coffee and a pastry and they are by no means as easy to find as ham and eggs. St. Honore Boulangerie in the northwest section of Portland scores 99 out of 100 on the breakfast meter for me. Muffins, coffee cake, scones or cookies are not pastry. I want Viennoserie. Croissants, pain au chocolate, Danish, fruit tarts, grille aux pommes. Something rich and flavorful enough that its not lost in a wash of strong coffee yet light enough to continue your day. From my viewpoint, all of the patisserie at SH would fill that bill! I went for the Normandy apple toast to try something new. A take on pain perdu (French toast) with a custard, a hint of rum and apple slices on top. Very, Very good. A single shot cappuccino to accompany and life if good. This is a wonderful bakery and restaurant and if I lived here, I would dedicate myself to eating my way through the entire menu.So why not perfect score? I must again invoke the wisdom of Yogi, no one goes there anymore, its too crowed. Such quality will always attract a crowd and it is natural for people to embrace it but the painfully slow turnover of tables caused by the terminal lingerers combined with the constant crush of customer demand make it impossible to really enjoy perusing the product lines or even sit comfortably with your order. I thought the staff handled everything as well as can be expected. I hope that the quality is truly the draw, it must be because I didnt see a laptop in sight, free wifi being a must to draw this good a crowd anywhere else.

Haughty. Come on inFor the unique experience of paying like you are in Paris. And to be treated like you are in a bread line.. a bread line in the USSR!The food sucks and smells weirdThe service is rude

Close to France…. After living in Paris, this comes very close to what you might find there. A little overpriced but great for a special sweet treat, a glass of red wine or a huge cappuccino.

Great place to start your day. Wonderful, relaxed place to enjoy a cafe, a pastry and read the paper. Great decor and relaxing vibe.

Great pastries (try the Normandy apple tart!) and televised viewing of the Tour de France through July. Great start and finish for Portland bike rides. Ignore the rude counter woman. All other employees are sweet.
