St. Jack is the quiescent French restaurant, warm, inviting, polished. My favorite time to nest in the bar is 4:00, the onset of Happy Hour. You’ll likely have the lovely space all to yourself until 5:00, when it then fills up quickly with folks from the toney Nob Hill hood. If you ask nicely, your server will swap the lively bar music for the mood setting French discs they play in the separate dining room.My fave dish so far is Clams (sometimes Mussels), Caramelized Onion & Ginger, Garlic, White Wine, Cream, & Chile. Perfect rendition of a French classic. Also top-notch is Gratin de Macaroni with White Cheddar, Fourme d’ Ambert, Gruyere, Bacon & Shallots. I’ve followed Chef Aaron Barnett to three restaurants in pursuit of his world-class Mac & Cheese. No one makes it like he makes it.Hamburger & Frites with Gruyere, St. Jack Sauce, & Caramelized Onion is also notable. thelunacafe.com
