We’ve been to the Uptown Billiards Club to play pool and have drinks, but we never got beyond the happy hour menu. That changed recently when we ventured into the bar dinner menu and found a surprise. it was really, really good. So good, in fact, that we asked if Chef Peter Kuhlman could come out to visit so that we could pay our complements. He came, we did, and everyone walked away pleased. The french fries were particularly good, but the other three dishes we ordered were excellent as well. magoguide.net

Mothra Says…. Pool, Drinks, & a Gnash. Months ago Shelley mentioned to me that Uptown Billiards is one place for drinks and appetizers that is a must. And, Shelley knows that I like to frequent this NW area neighborhood. Now, if you have not been, there are two real long stairs all the way up to the entrance. If you can make it up, you deserve a drink.Recently, I met up with Brian & Scott, a father and son team of very experienced ReMax realtors at the UBC for a drink and a gnash. These two gentlemen are hard working realtors who do a nice job for their customers. (If you want their contact info, merely email me). So, I arrived just a few minutes prior to my guests and ordered myself a …… you guessed it: Vodka martini, no vermouth, shaken, up, with a lemon twist. What else? Scott ordered himself a beer as did Brian. Now these guys are from Oregon and know their beers. They asked Roxanne all of the right questions. We laughed because I do that when ordering a glass/bottle of wine.About 10 minutes later, Scotts charcuteri and Brians soup of the day arrived. Both looked very good and at happy hour prices, everything was half off. An hour later after some catching up and some business as well, we departed back onto NW 23rd into the hustle and bustle of a crowded street full of shoppers, diners, and the cooling night aire of fall settling onto the city.Roxanne provided good service with a smile, great atmosphere amongst the dimly lit billiard tables, spirited conversation with my guests, good drinks and a terrific happy hour menu. Ill definitely make this a spot to frequent.. Mothra says…..3.35 of 5.0

The clams!!!. We stopped in to use the restroom (I know, tacky, huh?) and ended up staying because the bartender was so nice. Happy hour is the way to go! Apps are half price. We ordered the steamer calms, they come in this amazing broth, maybe it has tomato juice??

Great Atmosphere, Terrible Value. Very nice atmosphere that is conducive to large parties and intimate dates. However, for an establishment that prides themselves on their billiards this is hardly a deal. $10/hr weeknights; $12/hour weekends for a pool table. Are you kidding me? What a rip off! Considering their drinks and food are not cheap, you would think they could give their customers a little bit of leeway on the pool prices. Come on management, the activities are supposed to encourage drinking, not prohibit it! Business 101-if you build it, they will come. However, if you build it and charge them prohibitive amounts of money, they will come and feel alienated.

Amazing food!. My fiance and I had the 5 course dinner and the food was soooooo good! Some of the foods sound kind of strange but trust the chef!!! The wait staff was super friendly and helpful. The only reason I would not give this restaurant 5 stars was because there was a half inch shard of glass in my wine glass! I was a little surprised the meal, or at least the drinks were not comped, bit I believe it was an honest mistake. Another little mishap was that my fiance was missing one of the crucial parts of one of his dishes. It was quickly fixed. Also, we did have reservations for 7 and did not get seated until about 7:20, but we had a drink in the bar that was comped, so it was a nice touch. The quality of the food made it worth the few mishaps. I will try Uptown Billiards again without a doubt.

I went for the happy hour 5 course meal with wine pairings for $25. The theme of the evening was raspberries with the wine pairings complimenting each dish wonderfully. The food was cooked to perfection and the staff ws prompt and friendly.

Even the poor can feel swanky. I am a full-time volunteer paid a meager stipend by the government for my service. Fortunately in Portland, even the somewhat impoverished can eat well. Uptown Billiards is waaaaayyyy too expensive for me but my partner and I visited to celebrate our anniversary and took advantage of their amazing five course meal option. For $25 bucks -before 6pm, price raises to $35 after 6– you can enjoy their themed taster menu with wine pairings ($15 w/o wine, but why? Just why?). At first I was worried that this would be teeny-tiny bite sized courses, but no, I left full, drunk-ish, and happy. Money well spent and even a full-time volunteer was able to live in the lap of luxury for a night.
