I have been coming here for 40 years. Long before Local Ocean or the Bay House this was one of THE places to eat on the Oregon coast. They used to–and to a lesser extent, still do cook mostly French/NW cuisine. Over the years it has had its ups and downs but has always been better than most of the places nearby. Our last visit the service was friendly, the food was good, the wine list was excellent, and the fish was fresh. The interior needs a good refurbishing but other than that they are still a very solid choice in Newport.

Soon to return!. Tonight was our first time eating at Canyon Way and I was intensely impressed. The last four years I have been mourning the separation from all the wonderful Portland restaurants and drudging through the mediocre selection around Corvallis. This restaurant was amazing! There was a live band (Eli Lindsay, I believe) who played fantastic music, the service was great and the food was more than I could have expected. Right after we sat down they brought a small loaf of warm brown bread, some slices of a toasted bread with melted cheese on it and a pat of butter. I ordered what I thought was a light meal: The Platter. Soup, salad and some cheese. The salad was a good size with perfect greens and fresh cucumbers and tomato slices. I went for the french onion soup which turned out to be a large bowl, not the cup I had expected. The cheese on top was so thick I had to be a tad indelicate and use my fingers to pry off sections of it. The broth was rich and flavorful, but not salty. I managed only half of it and the rest came home in a box. My date had some sort of fish stew in a tomato based sauce, again a huge bowl. I thought it would be fishy, but it wasn’t. Certainly it was seafood, but it was lighter and probably attests to the freshness of the seafood. I didn’t see what all was in it, but I spotted a couple kinds of clams, shrimp, and large chunks of white flaky fish. If I had driven by I wouldn’t expected a combo restaurant and bookstore to have this kind of food. Unfortunately we got there just before closing so I missed out on exploring the bookstore. From what I saw they have a good selection and lots of other odds and ends you would expect in a coastal shop, ie some hats, jewelry, candles, etc. I plan to go back tomorrow and visit the bookstore and we will definitely return for a meal at the restaurant!!
Eclectic menu, well done. Friendly service and nice atmosphere
