While I’ve been spoiled enough to eat at some very amazing buffets in Las Vegas and elsewhere, this one is pretty decent. Did Friday brunch time, I’d guess you’d call it and it was definitely worth the price, which was under $11. Heck, I ate more than $11 worth of cedar plank salmon and ribs in the first round, not to mention the following 3 rounds. Recommended!!
Well then…. I have been a guest of CPB for several years, I’d venture that I’ve been there about 30-40 times. This review is not on any one single visit (I really don’t believe in reviewing a place after one visit) but on the culmination of my visits. Go for dinner, stay away from breakfast and brunch. The Good: Crab. More times than not it is cooked properly. Occasionally it’s been overcooked, but most time I am wrist deep in crab shrapnel enjoying myself quite thoroughly. If they didn’t have crab (or an attached casino with a great poker room) I probably would have cut my visits in half. But I love crab, and if you love crab, you won’t be disappointed. These aren’t the lethargic, starved crabs you will find at some Chinese buffets around town… these things are pretty big. The other offerings (I could almost recite the entire menu from memory, I’ve been there enough) usually include some pasta; Lasagna (ok), Pizza (great open flame oven… bland ingredients, always looks better than it tastes), stuffed shells, fried oysters, a shrimp station (pretty good), fried shrimp, clams, salmon, talapia, beer battered cod, turkey, flank steak, steak, prime rib, pork ribs, Indian flat bread, a Chinese food section with your usual offerings, a not-bad selection of sushi, a nice desert bar with plenty of stuff to choose from, a nice salad bar.The Bad:Well I’ve only taken off one star (1.5 if I could), so not a whole lot is bad. Breakfast is uninspired, so is the Sunday brunch-hybrid that they charge too much for. I can understand if you rate poorly based on these experiences, as they should be solid all-around and they are not. The service is usually good. Later at night the wait staff is very interested in cleaning up and getting out and not so much about their guests (pretty much haven’t been to a place yet that gives you proper service all the way until close). But they fill the drinks pretty regularly and pay pretty good attention, I’ve never been too angry with them, and it doesn’t take me much to get miffed at wait staff. The Ugly:The line to get in. Seriously, this was recently relocated and renovated within the casino, it used to be in a smaller section (where the sports bar is now) and the lines were atrocious. You think that adding seats and basically getting a do-over on the design would address these problems, but they didn’t. Perhaps they are a victim of their own success/popularity… and no matter how many seats they put in, their would still be a line…. but I doubt it. Come on, this is Oregon. There aren’t THAT many people. They should have made it bigger. The line at times has gone across to the other side of the casino where the sports bar is. That’s money waiting to come in. At least come up with some sort of ‘check in’ so people can go off and spend money at the casino while they wait. Good grief, how much unspent money is standing in line? What a waste. They actually had a ‘sign in’ on busy nights at the old buffet, they actually regressed and have no such thing now. I had one elderly lady in line collapse after finally getting to the desk. It was scary and a tough thing to get off my mind while I finally got to my table. Ugh. C’mon guys, it’s the 21st century, use some late 20th century technology and get a better system already. Those lines can be ridiculous. Show up early (5) or show up late (7-8:30) if you plan on missing the lines. Skip holidays, that is when you will find the line crossing the entirety of the casino.
Largest buffet in Oregon with more choices than you can imagine. Different international cuisines and creative recipes keep us coming back. Freshly prepared sushi options on weekends with Sunday the best pricing on this.
One of the best buffets i been too i know price is alittle pricey but trust me its worth the money always with the best food
Good price for a lot to choose from. Spirit Mountain Casino’s Cedar Plank Buffet, toted as the largest buffet in Oregon and feeling the urge to stuff myself with many foods, I decided to visit last Sunday (4/18). All-encompassingly, my opinion on the food taste, variety, ambience, service, etc, is dead-set in the middle or slightly to the way of not liking it. Roughly under half of what I chose was decent but not to the point of note-worthy. Well…okay I must be fair…to note foods that are worth picking up include: steamed clams, crab legs, shrimp cerviche, and fresh-tasting melons. Granted, there really is so much to eat and I didn’t get to try everything, but I tried as much as my stomach would allow. Some disappointing selections were: the breaded halibut portions, fried oysters, cooked shrimp mixed with mandarin oranges, pork verde, desserts, among others. I say disappointing b/c they looked delicious on the buffet but couldn’t support themselves on the plate and into the mouth. The halibut and oysters were way too bready, the mandarin oranges mixed in with the cooked-unpeeled shrimp didn’t really make sense to me, pork verde tasted like a hormel-packaged pork loin, and the desserts were on the side of being pretentious. Either way…it’s a pattern I’m finding as a general (and i do say general) rule of thumb where establishments whose focus and main draw is superiorly toward something else (i.e, alcohol, gambling, animals, etc), you can bet that the food isn’t going to rock your socks off. I went during the brunch hours and the price is perfect for the wide-selection you can choose from. The service is friendly and it wasn’t all that crowded and well maintained facilities.
Just ok. Not a lot of things I loved. The clams and crab were good. The fruit bar had good, fresh fruit. But, most of the food was generic and flavorless. Meat was overcooked, noodles mushy, and too much breading on the oysters and shrimp. The only thing I loved was the seafood mix salad. It had great favors – like shrimp, crab, and a great salsa blended well together. The desert bar was just ok, a lot to chose from , but not well made. Checking in to be seated is confusing and not organized well. My server was great and friendly. She met our needs well.
