Mothra Says…Euro Wines..A Great Place to Meet.. M & M met K and I at the Blackbird wine shop and Atomic Cheese Bar on east Fremont in the Beaumont district of Portland a few Saturdays back. Andy the owner greeted us and poured a variety of French roses, all terrific and under $20.00 each. Andy started with a 2012 Chateau du Cros Bordeaux rose, lovely and smooth at $14.00, and two other French roses that were subtle and amazing. At about this time we ordered a Crostini w brie and apricot jam, toasted almonds, arugula dressed with a light vinaigrette. In addition, we shared a Crostini with prosciutto and fig jam, lemon zest, summer salad of arugula & fresh Oregon blueberries and light vinaigrette. Wow! Well done! Next, one of my very favorites: a no oak chardonnay. But this was a La Croix Belle, a 2012, a French Chard. Now my love for chards goes way back to the mid 80s with heavy buttered Melo chards from the Napa and Sonoma valleys. Although hard to find, I can still locate a few of my favorite chards down in the Nor Cal wine valleys that I visit 2 to 3 times a year. This French chard, although new to me was mag-ni-fic! Of these two side by side Syrahs, a cottonwood 2010 from the Yakima valley and a 2010 French Syrah Les Perles. The Les Perles was classic and complex and very good at $14.00, the cottonwood from Yakima eastern Washington was very fruit forward and as it opened, blossomed. It retailed at $20.00. Of the four of us, although I loved the French Les Perles, I preferred the fruit forward Washington Syrah. Everyone enjoyed both. This is a rather large tasting and retail shop with a wall full of European and domestic wines to choose from with indoor and outdoor dining and tasting on the street side as well. In fact a sandwich deli in the back as well. Yes, we will be back. Great hors d oeuvres, great wine expertise, affordable wines in a nice relaxed setting. Mothra says…3.45 of 5.0
