the setting is pretty cool with more space than I can possibly imagine this place needing. but, when we arrived there was some confusion as to who was going to seat us and where. we walked all the way over to the hostess only to return to where we just were. the menu is adequate though not all that inspired. and the food was the same. I had the meatloaf sandwich and it was just okay. it was really difficult to keep together because the meat was not cut in the same way as the bread. the meatloaf was cooked and cut in circles while the bread was cut in triangles so they just didn’t agree with each other. the sauce was tangy, almost to an offense and the fries were unevenly cooked. it wasn’t a bad meal but there were lots of little things that weren’t done all that well that added up to a mediocre meal.
The only good thing we were served was the Coffee. My wife won a gift card to the Hop City Tavern, which used to be the Bistro 921 in the Portland Downtown Hilton Hotel. We started with Calamari, they covered it in diced pickles, which added a little bit of flavor but pretty much had the effect of making the calamari soggy. On top of that, it was the smallest portion of calamari appetizer I’ve ever been served anywhere. Certainly not worthy of $11.My wife ordered the fish & chips, and they were so soggy it was obvious the deep fryer’s oil wasn’t hot enough, even without the batter which my wife removed all of, the fish didn’t taste good at all. She said the fires were o.k., but they bordered on being cold.I had one of their flatbread pizzas, with crab and shrimp on it, with garlic pesto and crap on it.They put way too much olive oil on it that was completely unnecessary. It might be to some peoples taste but I certainly didnt enjoy it.Add to it that their recent remodel of the Bistro to the tavern, is hardly a tavern atmosphere, it is way too sterile, no pictures, not plants, no nothing. At least it was on a gift card, and they did offer to comp the whole meal, but I just gave them the gift card since I never intend to go back.
