We have been sitting at the sushi bar at Masu pretty much since it first opened. It has been one of only 2 or 3 sushi places in Portland to which we would return. For us it is all about the fish so I can’t speak about the rest of the menu. I have lived several years in Tokyo and the fish was first rate back when Ryan Roadhouse was behind the bar. Happily he trained his crew because the food stayed nearly as good (if less creative) when he left to start Nodoguro. They have fewer exotics now but high quality standard sushi fish. Unfortunately staff and ownership changes have rendered the fish irrelevant. We will never be going back.I booked 4 seats at the bar for last Saturday night on OpenTable way in advance. When 2 more wanted to join us I called directly to see if we could possibly get all 6 seats at the bar and was assured it was no problem. Confirmed for 6:30. However, when we arrived they claimed to have double booked the bar. The assistant manager came and began by blaming the booking website until I explained I had actually called, then demanded I tell her who I spoke with. There was no effort to check whose reservation was made earlier, no offer of any extra to offset their mistake, no apology whatsoever. It was simply take a table or take a hike. We took a hike. During this discussion the bar emptied completely. When we left there were only 2 seats taken. Why she would turn away 6 people who were present to seat 2 who had not yet arrived is beyond me. Later it turned out that they had reported us to OpenTable as a no show (I assume to avoid paying the reservation fee). The guys behind the bar do a very workman-like job of turning out decent sashimi but happily there are a couple of good options in PDX because that’s where I’ll be going.

Egg plant appetizer was an exciting start followed by 2 choices of good maki sushi. One w a chili sauce drizzle stood out proudly!! But all the seaweed dishes turn sour/bitter. Waiter was exceedingly long in taking our order. Never to return.
Good, but really pricey. We had one roll, two miso soups, salad, and a small thing of sake, for $40. One roll $15 average. Fresh fish, good food, calamari rocked. Hard to cook calamari, they did so perfectly!
Expected More. Food was sub-par at best. Expected more from a sushi restaurant on the West Coast, left unimpressed. For what you pay, it should have delivered more. And, the rolls could have been rolled tighter, too – fell apart easily upon picking them up. This was my first time visiting Masu, so I could have just caught them on an off night.
Good food, great service and nice atmosphere. My only hesitation with going there again would be how pricey the place is. I expect a certain coat For sushi but it was still really expensive.
Happy hour. A little pricy, but after 10pm they have a great happy hour food prices.
